    -Illinois legislature elects Lymann Trumbull as senate instead of Lincoln.

    -The speech was given to more then 1,000 delagtes in Springfield, Illinois after being told he was nominated to run for US Senate.

    -Lincoln gave this speech at the time that the nation was at its weakest and literally was falling apart.
    - For the above reason, Lincoln expressed in his speech that he meant no harm to the southern states, but every informed person knew his strong opinion on slavery.
    - The south though took this speech as a challenge of war and the Civil War started the next month.

    • Lincoln issued the Emacipation Proclamation as teh covilwar entered its 3rd bloody and horrible year. -The Emancipation Proclamtion declared that "all persons held as slaves within the rebelious states, are and henceforward shallbe free". -It did not free all slaves in the US but rather only the ones not under Union control.

    -Lincoln delivers this speech dedicating the Military battlefield in Gettysburg, Pennsylvannia as a National Cemetery.
    - In 272 word Lincoln delievers a speech giving the meaning of the Civil War as well as honoring the Union soldiers who had fallen. This speech is today known as one of the most famous speeches in American history.
    -Edward Everette was the main speaker at Gettysburg on November 19th but today Lincoln's speech is the most remembered one.

    -George McClellan, a major general during the Civil War, ran agaisnt him,
    -Lincoln won the election with over 400,000 votes and 212 electoral votes to 21 for McClellan.

    • Lincoln gave this speech two days after Robert E. Lee surrendered to the Grant.
    • Lincoln wanted to address the issue of reconstruction and did this to many people of the White House Balcony. -In his spech Lincoln discussed the issues of needing the executive and legislative branches to cooperate and agree. Also in his speech he talked about African American citizenship.

    --John Wilkes Boothe shoots Lincoln in the back of the head at Fords Theatre, in Washington D.C,. while watching the play, Our American Cousin, with his wife Mary.
    - Lincoln was the first American president to be assassinated and at only 56 years old.
    -Abraham Lincoln dies the next day, April 25th, at the Petersen Boarding House at 7:22 in the morning.

    -Lincoln islaid to rest at Oak Ridge Cemetery in his hometown of Springfield, IL.
    -His funeral train went through 180 cities in 7 states before reaching Springfield.
    -At each stop of the funeral procession Lincoln's casket was carried out of the hearce and taken into a public building for viewing.
