At the end of the 4th century the Roman empire began to fall apart .
Angles and Saxons came from Holland ,Germany and Denmark. -

MEDIEVAL LONDON
William the Conqueror invaded England from France.
The houses were made of wood, the roads were covered in stones- cobbles.There were many merchants and craftmen.The streets were named after them -eg. Bread was sold in Bread street ! -

TUDOR AND ELIZABETHAN LONDON
Henry VII became king in 1485.He was followed by Henry VIII. Tudor was their family name. Elizabeth I was the last Tudor-the Elizabethan period.Under the Tudors London grew wealthier and spread beyond the old city walls.1665 Plague kills about 100.000 peoplein London.
1666 the Great Fire of London destroys 4/5 of the city. -

In 1714 George I becomes king.The Hanovers rule Britain until 1837.
Britain becomes a very powerful country.
London is the heart of trade, finance and art. -

VICTORIAN LONDON
In Victorian era London was the heart of a powerful empire. Grand buildings such as Saint Pancras station date from Victorian times . Transport developed and in 1863 the world's first Underground railway opened.Queen Victoria ruled for 64 years!
