Will meets Suzie
After joining SPAT (single parents, alone and together), did Will met Suzie at the first meeting. Will came with the idea to have a fantasy son, to join the groupe and meet single women to have sex with. It gets harder and harder for Will to lie about his son to Suzie, but they are dating for a while. -
Marcus looses his friends
Marcus have two friends at his school, who is Nicky and Mark. The three of them are getting beated up at school everyday, and Nicky and Mark thinks it is Marcus' fault, so they tell him that they can not be friends anymore. -
Will, Suzie and Marcus go on a picnic
Suzie is a friend of Fiona, Marcus' mother, so Fiona asked Suzie to take Marcus with her on a picnic. Will was Suzie's date, and that was the first time Will and Marcus met each other. None of them got a good first impression. Will thought that Marcus was annoying, and Marcus thought that Will was dumb. At the end killed Marcus a duck by throwing bread at it. After that they called it the ''Dead Duck Day''. -
Fiona attempts suicide
Will followed Suzie and Marcus home after the picnic. When they came in saw they Fiona laying halfway on the sofa, with an empty pill bottle. This is also why it called it the ''Dead Duck Day''. They drove to the hospital with Fiona, and she slept there. The doctors said she was going to be fine, and she came home the day after. But in meanwhile Fiona was at the hospital, did Marcus found a suicide letter that Fiona had written. When Fiona came home was Marcus very angry with her. -
Will and Marcus gets a relationship
Marcus tried to get Will to fall in love with his mom in order to cheer her up. But he failed on his mission, and it resulted with Marcus and Will got closer after Marcus got to know that Will did not have a kid, and started to blackmail him. Afterwards started Marcus to go home to Will after school. He began to realize that he wanted a dad-roll in his life, and Will helped him with bying new sneakers that would help Marcus to fit more in at his school. Of course did these shoes got stolen. -
Will celebrates Christmas Eve with Fiona and Marcus
Marcus asked Will if he wanted to celebrate Christmas Eve at their house, and Will hesitated with saying yes, but eventually he accepted the invitation. Clive, Marcus' dad, his wife and his wife's mom was also with them. But later on the evening came Suzie, and it got awkward between her and Will, because she had found out that he was lying about Ned, his invented son. They started to fight, and it ended with Will went home. -
Marcus get to know Ellie McRae
Marcus got bullied at school and had to talk to the principal. Outside the principal's door stood Ellie McRae, who wore a Kurt Cobain shirt every day and made trouble at the school all the time. Marcus knew this. and started to ask her what she had done. Ellie thought that Marcus was funny and began to hang out with him at school. After that they became closer and closer friends. -
Clive breaks his collar bone
Marcus' father, Clive, broke his collar bone because he fell down from a window-ledge, and it got him started to think about his life. So he invited Marcus to come and visit him in Cambridge because Clive understood that he had not been there for Marcus through his childhood. -
Marcus brings Ellie to Clive
When Marcus got invited to Clive, he wanted to bring Ellie McRae with him because he did not wanted to go alone. Marcus got upset when he heard that his dad wanted to see him, just becuase he brokes his collar bone. So Marcus thought that Ellie might would do something with his dad so as a revenge. -
Ellie smashes a shop window
When Marcus and Ellie are on their way to Clive they see a shop window with suveniers of Kurt Cobain becuase he had recently died. Ellie got very angry and smashed the window because she would not let the shop earn money out of his dead. This resulted with Marcus and Ellie arrested. -
Will falls in love with Rachel
They met each other on New Year's Eve, and been dating since then. Rachel illustrates childrens book and have a son at Marcus' age. Will did not want to fall in love, but Rachel made him more mature, and Will have not felt like this for any woman ever. -
Nearly every character is present at a police station
This was the penultimate scene where everyone got to meet each other. It were bad vibes at the police station. Clive and his new wife came first, and Marcus got tired so he started to yell at Clive how bad father he had been. Afterwards came Will, Fiona and Ellie's mom. At the end had almost everbody expressed how they felt and many truths came out. -
At the end Will plays a Joni Mitchell song on piano to see if Marcus had changed
Will decides to find out if Marcus changed or not, so he starts to play a Joni Mitchell song on the piano. (Fiona had always played Joni Mitchell for Marcus and nothing else, because she did not want him to listen to anyone other artists.) When Will played it, Marcus yelled ''I bloody hate Joni Mitchell''. That showed that Marcus had started to think for himself, and not only listen to his mom. Will ended up marrying Rachel, but not in the book.
