    The Compromise of 1820 began because the Notherners and Southerners had an argument about slaves. Northerners did not want them and Southerners did so both sides did all they could to get what they wanted. The Northerners where a safe zone for slaves who escaped from the Southerners because the Northerners didn't support slavery.

  • The Wilmot Proviso

    The Wilmot Proviso
    It was agreed in congress that slaves were prohibited in former Louisiana territory, except in Missouri. When the issue of slavery came up in 1846 when the U.S. captured Mexico and made it U.S. territory. Northerners tried to keep slavery out of that area. This is when a proviso, or condition, was tacked onto another bill that prevented any kind of slavery in any territories won by Mexico.

    Free State
    Because of the gold rush in California people moved there which meant they would have brought their slaves. So what had to be found out was whether or not it should be a slave state or a free state. President Zachory Taylor told California that it could apply for statehood without becoming a territory. This is what California did and applied itself as a free state.

    Five laws were made before it got to this compromise where Texas received money for releasing land west of Rio Grande, and no laws against slavery were made in the remainder of the territory gained from Mexico.

    Fugitive Slave Act
    The Fugitive Slave Act is the law that lets slave catchers catch a slave. The matter was then handed over to a federal commissioner who was paid five dollars to release the defendant and ten to lock him up. The Northerners did not like this law because it made them go against what they beleived in and it also made them go against the law.

    Kansas-Nebraska Act
    The Kansas- Nebraska Act is when people in the North started to get violent and attack people. John Brown for example snuck into a cabin with his sons and killed five southerners. They were eventually caught, and hung for their crimes but were praised by the North for their bravery.
