My First Day
Hello there, my name isJose Miguel Cruz. I was born into a great family in the Southwestern part of Mexico. I have 4 older brothers and 3 younger sisters. The home we lived in was very packed and only had two full rooms. I did not mind it one bit, I loved my family very much. My siblings and I worked very hard in our small town, we did anything to earn money for our mother, as she was becoming very ill very fast. -
The Arrival
My family had just arrived to Angle Island, California. We are emmidietly directed to the immigration station to get checked out and settled in. The building was very crowded and full of families from multiple countries. Our family was one of two Mexican families who had come to America. My father, brothers, and I were separated from my sisters into chech-out lanes then into dormitories. After two days and one night we meet up again and venture out to find a home. -
Settlement In the City
Urban GrowthWe move to a great city called San Francisco. The home we are able to afford is small, cheap, but decent. Its on the first floor of a local city apartment. All the boys in the family, including me, find work as constructors of buildings, most importantly skyscrapers. It was a very hard and dangeroud job for us. As the height got higher the wind started to pick up and the temperature was hot in the summer. Every penny earned went to things we need like food and furniture. -
Our Tragic Move
Migration.I was only 19 years old when our family had migrated to America due to high poverty standards and lack of food and shelter. It was also the same year when my mother had passed away from a terrible illness; cancer. We did not know it was so serious until she finally moved on. In devistation it was hard to move on and actually move. The journey there was very harsh. It was a hot summer. Everyone was miserable. -
Life Improvements
Im was 25 years old and the family had grown tremendously. Since we lived in the same home and kept the same jog for a few years we had earned enough money to get a larger house. It was still in the city but suited all our needs. My older brothers all got married and moved out. I still work with them but my father retires. I was taking care of all my little sisters and my now my father. Once in a while my brothers would come and visit to bring happy wishes to the family. -
A Small Downfall
I speak now at the age of 27. I have just found out that cancer has grown in an area near my stomache. My personal doctor does not know exactly how I have to live. I've had a great life until this point. I am just so grateful that all my family member are here to support me here in this hospital. Everyone was and is so kind here in America. There were no big troubles for at all. I will continue to believe and stay strong
