Kanō Jigorō was the founder of Judo. Judo is the parent martial art to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Judo was the first Japanese martial art to gain widespread international recognition, and the first to become an official Olympic sport other than wrestling. -
Mitsuyo Maeda was born
Maeda was they main component to the development of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. He and a few important Brazilians were the main developers of this sport. Maeda fought in more than 2,000 professional fights, and was referred to as the "toughest man alive" at the time in which he lived. -
Carlos Gracie was born
Carlos Gracie was one of Maeda's first Brazilian Judo students. He and his family were the first to start what we know as Brazilian Jiu Jitsu today. -
Helio Gracie was born
Helio was one of the co-founders of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu aka Brazilian Jiu Jitsu with his brother Carlos. He was named Man of the Year in 1997 by the American martial arts publication Black Belt magazine. -
