Outlawing Slavery in Mexico
Slave owners became angry when Mexico outlawed slavery. Moses Austin persuaded the government to let the slave owners keep their slaves. -

By the 1830, Moses Austin had attracted many families who were looking to live in Texas with him to escape from the law, start a new life, or look for a chance to grow rich. -

Santa Anna throws Moses Austin in jail for planning to rebel. Austin's followers grow furious. -
Come and Get It
In 1835, Santa Anna and his troops tried and failed to take a cannon from Austin and his followers. Santa Anna was angered and sent 6,000 troops to Texas. -
Santa Anna Surrounds San Antonio
Santa Annas troops surround San Antonio. The next day the army storms the Alamo. Two nights later Travis sends out a message that says that the enemy demanded surrender and he replied with a cannon shot. -
Declare Independence
Texans met at a settlement to decide what to do about Santa Anna's troops. They decide to declare Texas a free republic and put Sam Houston in command of the Texas army. -
Texans want to be part of the U.S.A.
Many Texans wanted to be part of the United States, so the government asked Congress to annex Texas to the Union.But some feared that Texas would allow slavery and upset the balance of slave and free states. Congress voted against the annexation. -
Remember the Alamo
Houston surprises Santa Anna near the San Jacinto River. The Texans advanced screaming 'remember the Alamo- remember Goliad!' The Texans killed more than half the Mexican army in only 18 minutes. Santa Anna had to sign a treaty giving Texas its freedom. -
Lone Star Republic
Texans raised the official flag of the independent nation of Texas nicknamed the Lone Star Republic. Sam Houston is elected president.
