Prohibition Begins
Many women were complaining that their husbands were coming home drunk and abusing their wives and kids because of alcohol. Some also linked alcohol to prostitution. Eventually, the U.S. passed the 18th amendment, making alcohol illegal. -
Teapot Dome Scandal
This scandal was an unprecedented bribery scandal. Teapot Dome is an oil field in Wyoming. In 1921, control of U.S. Navy petroleum reserves at Teapot Dome was transferred from the U.S. Navy Department to the Department of the Interior. In 1922, Albert B. Fall, Secretary of the Interior, leased, without competitive bidding, the Teapot Dome fields to Harry F. Sinclair. Apparently in 1921, Doheny had lent Fall $100,000 and Sinclair had also given him a large amount of money. Fall was put in prison. -
President Coolidge is elected
Calvin Coolidge was the 30th president of the U.S. He was formerly a Republican lawyer in Vermont. He was the 29th Vice President to President Harding. Harding died on August 2nd, 1923, leading to Coolidge's succession to the presidency. -
The Spirit of St. Louis starts its flight
The Spirit of St. Louis is a custom-built, single seat monoplane that was flown solo by Charles Lindbergh for the first non-stop flight from New York to Paris. The Spirit of St. Louis took off from Roosevelt Airfield in Garden City. -
The Spirit of St. Louis ends its flight
The Spirit of St. Louis ended its flight in 33 hours and 30 minutes. It landed in Le Bourget Aerodome in Paris. -
President Hoover is elected
Herbert Hoover was the 31st President of the U.S. He was a mining engineer and author. In the Presidential election of 1928, he easily won the Republican vote, despite having no previoius office experience. Although, most previous presidents did not like him at all. -
Black Tuesday
Also known as the Wallstreet Crash of 1929. It was the most devastating stock market crash in the history of the U.S. This was the beginning of the Great Depression. -

Dust Bowl years
This was a period of severe dust storms causing major damage to the land. This was caused by severe drought caused by farmers not using crop rotation. -
Hawley-Smoot Tariff Act
This act raised tariffs on over 200,000 imported goods to record levels. This caused the imports and exports of the U.S. eventually decrease. Some people think this was a factor in the cause of the Great Depression. -
Bonus Army March
The Bonus Army marched in Washington D.C. while the Senate was voting on the Patman Bonus Bill, which would move forward the date when World War I veterans recieved a cash bonus. The army eventually was attacked by the actual U.S. army at the time and the Bonus Army never got their pay earlier. But they could work in the Civilian Conservation Corps for money. -
President Franklin D. Roosevelt is elected
He was the 32nd President of the U.S. He led the nation during its worst time: the Great Depression. He also worked closely to lead the Allies in WWII, but he died right before victory. -
Civilian Conservation Corps
This was a public work relief program for unemployed men from ages 18-25. This was created as part of the New Deal. -
Tennessee Valley Authority
TVA was created to provide navigation, flood control, electricity generation, fertilizer manufacturing, and economic developement in the Tennessee Valley, who was greatly injured by the Great Depression. -
FDIC
This is a U.S. Government Corporation. It provides deposit insurance, which gurantees the safety of deposits. It also examines and supervises certain financial institutions for safety and soundness, performs certain consumer-protection functions, and manages banks in recieverships. -
Prohibition Ends
Prohibition was becoming increasingly unpopular and rose the crime rate. The 18th amendment was eventually repealed and rose the alcohol industies funds. -
Works Progress Administration
This was the largest New Deal agency, employing millions of people to carry out public works projects. It gave food, clothing, and housing to the people. -
Social Security Act
This made social security, which is a social insurance program that is funded through dedicated payroll taxes. This was also created as part of the New Deal. The act was an attempt to limit what were seen as dangers, such as old age, poverty, unemployment, and the burdens of widows and fatherless children. -

On this day, Britain and France called war on Germany because Germany failed to withdraw in accordance with Britain and France.
