Creation of the Dominion of Canada on July 1, 1867. The British Province of Canada was divided into the new Canadian provinces of Ontario and Quebec, and two other British colonies, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, also became provinces of Canada. Canada was goverened under the British North America Act, which required permission from the British to enact new laws and policies. -
Dominion of Canada Takes Ownership of Rupert's Land
In 1869 the Hudson's Bay Company ceded Rupert's Land to the Dominion of Canada, although ownership wasn't established until December 1st, and final payment wasn't given until 1870. -
Northwest Territories Created
This mass of land was given to Canada from Britain, although the artic island remained under British claim until 1880. -
Manitoba Established
Manitoba was established by an Act of Parliament on July 15, 1870, originally as an area much smaller than the current province. -
Incorporation of British Columbia into Confederation of Canada
In 1866, the Colony of British Columbia and the Colony of Vancouver Island merged into a single Colony of British Columbia, until their incorporation into the Canadian Confederation in 1871. -
Prince Edward Island Joins the Confederation of Canada
This Maritime colony that had decided not to join Confederation in 1867, but as a whole decided to join in 1873. -

Saskatchewan and Alberta joined the Confederation of Canada
Both provinces of Saskatchew and Alberta (called Rupert's Land at the time) were acquired from the Hudson's Bay Compnay, they were seperated from the North West Territories to become their own provinces. They were the 8th and 9th provinces to join the confederation of Canada. -
Newfoundland Joins Country of Canada
Despite many opposing stances, the former colony of Newfoundland is made the newest province of Canada. -
Canada Adopts Current National Flag

After much debate, the old red ensign style of flag was given up in exchange for this model that was easier to remember and simple enough for a child to draw. -
Canadian Constitution Patriated To Canada
Canadian ConstitutionThe Constitution Act was introduced as part of Canada's process of "patriating" the constitution, introducing several amendments to the British North America Act, 1867, and changing the latter's name in Canada to the Constitution Act, 1867. Elizabeth II as Queen of Canada brought the act into effect with a proclamation she signed in Ottawa on April 17, 1982. Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau was a proponent of the decision, and his legacy is best reflected with the constitution. -
Nunavut Territory Established
Nunavut is the largest and newest federal territory of Canada; it was separated officially from the Northwest Territories on April 1, 1999, though the actual boundaries had been established in 1993. -
