    The Missouri Compromise was thought by Henry Clay. Missouri joined the Union as a slave state. So the Congress would be even, Maine joined the Union as a free state.
  • Compromise of 1850

    The North got California into the Union as a free state and the South got Utah and New Mexico to vote on whether they would have slavery in their state or not.

    Kansas - Nebraska Act
    The area of Kansas and Nebraska gave the people of these territories the right to regulate matters related to slavery. This Act added to the tensions between the north and the south because the north knew that once slavery was in a state it would not go away.

    An abolitionist was killed and John Brown and his five sons acted immeaditley. They joined as fugitive slaves and attacked the mob of Missourians. During Brown's "attack' he was surrounded by a militia. Later on he was hanged to death.

    Dred Scott tried to sue his way out of slavery. In court, they wouldn't allow him to sue his way out of slavery because he wasn't an American citizen. Roger Taney involved the fifth amendment claiming a slave is private property. It is also unconstitutional for someone to tell that state they can't have slavery there.

    Abraham Lincoln was elected president of the United States.
    He won the election without winning any states in the south.
    The south didn't like him being president so they seperated and became the confederacy.

    Before the 1860 election, the south seperated from the Union and became the Confederacy. They seperated because Abraham Lincoln became president and the south thought he would mess with slavery and mess up their lives.
