Estates General
Louis XVI had all three estates prepare cahiers. Taxes were getting very expensive for some people that shoemakers could not buy leather to make shoes. Delegates from the third estate were elected only by propertied men could vote. The king was claiming to represent the people of France they were unhappy with this and declared themselves to be the National Assembly. The king would not let them meet so he decided to lock the doors to their meeting place. -
Storming Bastille
The day of July 14 1789, Paris embraced the spotlight from the National Assembly meeting in Versailles. Outside the Basille there were more than 800 Parisians. The crowd was demanding weapons and gun powder that they had thought was being stored there. When the commander of the Bastille refused to open the gates he then open fired on the crowd, many were killed. The crowd became very anger and busted through the gaurdes, they had killed the commander. When they also released many prisoners but.. -

they had found no weapons at all. The Bastille was a symbol of the people of France representing years of abuse by the monarchy. -
Declaration of the Rights of Men
In late August the French declaration announced that all men were "Born and ramain free and equal in rights." Many women were not very pleased that the declaration of the rights of men did not grant the equal citizenship to them also. -
Woman's March on Versailles
In the rain on October 5th 1789, 6,000 women marched because they were unhappy with Queen Marie Antionette. They were not happy because they believed Marie Antionette did not care about them. -
Constitution
The constitution set up a limited monarchy. Law markers were now elected by male citizens and tax payers. -
Threats from abroad
The failed escape of Louis XVI has brought problems abroad. The king od Prussia and the emperor of Austria issued the Declaration of Pilnitz. Even though this document had many bluffs written in it France took this very serious. They began to prepare for war. -
Radicals Declare War
The radicals were fighting for power as they also declared war.The Legislative Assembly took office they did not last long, ending in less than one year. They faced economic problems and renewed turmoil prices increased rapidly.Many sans-calottes demanded a republic. A war between French Revolutinaries and Eurpoean monarchs fighting within their own government. -
Church under state control
The French Catholic church was put under state control. The civil constitution set rules so that bishops and priests had to be elected. -
Monarchy is Abolished
As the revolution continued news about the war abroad increased tension.Royalist officers were deserting the French army. They joined emigres and others hopinh to restore the kings power.A crowd of Parisians stormed the royal palace of the Tuileries and slaughtered the guardes of the kings. Radicals then took control. -
Spread of Nationalism
Nationalism spread through France. France was now a nation in arms. The French people attended civic festivals that celebratedt the nation. -
Third Stage.
The revolution entered its third stage moving away from the excesses of the Convention. The constitution set up a fiveman directory and a two house legislature elected y male citizens. In hard times they turned to Neopoleon. The politicans planned to use him to advance their own goals. -
Maximilien Robespierre
The goverment had battled counterrevolutionaries under the control of Robesierre. He is a shrewd lawyer and a politican. He promoted religious toleration and wanted to abolish slavery.
