    Deficit spendingLouis XIV had left France deeply in debt. The Seven Years War and the American Revolution strained their debt even further. By 1789, about haf the goverments income from taxes went to paying the interest on their enormous debt.

    Louis XVI Calls the Estates-General
    • May 5, 1789 Louis XVI calls the Estates-General for their first meeting since 1614
    • The First and Second Estates always outvoted the Third Estate 2:1
    • The Third Estate wanted them to all meet in a single body with votes counted "by head."
    • The Third Estate took a daring step and all met at a nearby indoor tennis court. This is where the famous "Tennis Court Oath" was taken.
    • They swore to never separate and to meet wherever the circumstances might require till we have a just constitution.

    On July 14, 1789, over 800 parisians gathered outside a medieval looking fortress uses as a prison called the bastille. They demanded gun powder and weapons which they thought was kept inside. The commander refused entry and open fired on the crowd. Many died but the ones that broke through released all the prisoners and killed the commander and his five guards.

    A declaration was written about wha men can and can not do. It said that all men were born equally and this was mainly based off of the Declaration of Independence.

    6000 women marched in the rain full of rage yelling the word "Bread" They were mad at Marie Antionette because she didnt care about them. They rushed into her palace looking for her, but she was no where to be found. So they stabbed and completely destroyed her bed.

    The set up a limited monarcy which means that the king shares his power with the rest of the goverment. This also means that la makers would be elected by tax-paying male citizens.

    Many sans-culottes demaned a goverment ruled by elected representatives instead of a monarch. It was a war between French revolutionaries and the Europe monachs.

    Monarchy is abolished
    As the revolution continued, news about the war raised the tensions. Prussian forces were cutting down French recruits. About 1200 prisoners, including noble priests, were killed by angry citizens. The Convention that met in September 1792 was made up of more radicals than earlier assembiles. They voted to abolish the monarchy and establish a Republic, The French Republic.
