  • Prohibition

    The Volstead act made it illegal to sell alcohol in the United States. This went into effect January 16, 1920. By 1925 there were anywhere from 30,000 to 100,000 speakeasy clubs.
  • Women get their first vote (19th amendment)

    Women get their first vote (19th amendment)
    August 26th the 19th amendment became a law and women would be able to vote in the fall of 1920. This was also known as womens sufferage. Each states house had to vote on this amendment and it was split and came down to Tenessee to decide if it would pass. This included the upcoming presidential election that women would be allowed to vote on.

    Johnny Weissmuller was the first person to swim 100m in less then a minute. He continued to win three gold medals in 1924 and two gold medals in 1928. He got 52 US titles and 28 world distance records.
  • Immigration Act

    The US changed the limit in the number of immigrants admitted into the US to 2%. The number use to be 3% in 1921. In 1921 it was called the Emergency Quota Act.
  • Scope's Trial

    Scope's Trial
    John Scopes, a biology teacher in Dayton Tennessee broke the law about teaching evolution in schools and was arrested. His lawyer was Clarence Darrow. The Chicago Tribune installed a radio transmitter and this became the first trial in America to be brodcasted. William Jennings Bryan (lead of prosecution) was called to the stand. He was asked about why he thought the Bible was right and the evolution theory was wrong and he couldn't explain everything. John Scopes was found guilty after 11 days.

    The first women to swim across the english channel was Gertrude Ederle. She swam 21 miles at age 19. Her time was 14 hours and 31 minutes, this beat the previous record set by a man.
  • Lindbergh

    The first person to fly over the ocean was Charles Lidnbergh. It took him 33 and a half hours. He went from New York to Paris and flew 3600 miles.
  • Talking Movie

    Al Jolson stars in the first talking movie. This was the beggining of something great. The silent movie was not as popular as it use to be once talking movies came out.
  • St.Valentines Day Massacre

    This was part of the organized crime going on in Chicago. It was led by Al Capone. Many people died on this day.
  • Black Tuesday

    This took place in New York and was the biggest stock market crash in history. People had borrowed money to buy the most expensive stocks but then when the stock market crashed these people went bankrupt.
