  • LMS

    LMS
Learning management systems are a part of my daily life, both professionally and in my academic studies. The invention of LMS brought together all the pieces of learning design, and houses it in a permenant place (as long as you continue the licence).
Although the LMS is standard in learning, it does have its downside. "The LMS has become the only route for delivering e-learning in many institutions, with a consequent loss of expertise and innovation." (Weller, 2018)
  • Video

    Video
Youtube came about in 2005. The use of video in a class (both taken or teaching) is invaluable. Video has helped me teach my students during Remote Learning days, and has allowed me to learn how to do many things, like fix my washing machine and relearn geometric sequences. Although video has been around for a long time, "in 2018, text remains the dominant communication form in education" (Weller, 2018). This quote is re-framing my ID approaches.
  • Hurricane Katrina

    Hurricane Katrina
Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans. Controversy surrounded the damage and relief as a disproportionate amount of black people were effected. Read more here: https://www.ceejh.center/blog/hurricane-katrina-analyzing-the-damage-ams7n-bfnhh-t3pgb
  • Twitter and Social Media

    Twitter and Social Media
Social media is a part of almost every adult's life. Aside from keeping up with friends and family, going on political rants, and posting food pictures, in 2009 social media became used in the educational space. "The ability to make global connections, to easily cross disciplines, and to engage in meaningful discussion all before breakfast was revolutionary." (Weller, 2018).

  • Personalized Learning Environments

    Personalized Learning Environments
PLE are tools that allow a learner to direct their own learning. Personalizing instructional design to the learner helps with engagement and provides a more meaningful experience. Personalization is one of the key focuses of my school district. Although PLE has changed a bit since 2011, it is still useful. According to Weller, "The focus shifted from a personalized set of tools to a personalized set of resources, and in recent years this has become the goal of personalization." (Weller, 2018)

  • Digital Badges

    Digital Badges
Digital badges, although created in 2011, took off around 2015 in the EdTech arena. I have used digital badges in my classroom to show mastery of each unit covered throughout the school year. Unfortunately, my students did not really get behind this initiative. According to Weller "if employers or institutions come to widely accept and value digital badges, then they will gain credence with learners, creating a virtuous circle." (Weller, 2018).
  • Same-Sex Marriage Legalized

    Same-Sex Marriage Legalized
The legalization of same-sex marriages, increased acceptance of a large community of people. Read this article to learn about the link between legalization and a decrease in high school suicide attempts: https://publichealth.jhu.edu/2017/same-sex-marriage-legalization-linked-to-reduction-in-suicide-attempts-among-high-school-students
