Month 1
The baby is about 1/4 in long- less than a grain of rice, and at this month the baby is called a blastocyst. The baby has already developed all the genetic materials, and the sex has already been decided. -
Month 2
In the second month of pregnancy, your little one, now known as a fetus, develops facial features such as the mouth, tongue, and nose. By the end of the second month of pregnancy, the organs, skeleton, and limbs will be in place. -
Month 3
The baby is already a fetus, is between 2-4 in. long. All organs are present, fingernails and external ears are developing and physical body is becoming more fully formed. The baby is moving their arms and legs. At this stage, the baby starts to sucking his thumb. -
Month 4
The nervous system is starting to function at this point in pregnancy. The reproductive organs and genitalia are now fully developed, and your health care provider can see on ultrasound if you are having a boy or a girl. Your baby's heartbeat may now be audible through an instrument called a Doppler.
By the end of the fourth month, your baby is about 6 inches long and weighs about 4 ounces. -
Month 5
The baby is about 10 oz, and 6-9 in. long. The baby is covered with fine protective hair. The baby's finger nails are developed and permanent teeth buds behind fully formed baby teeth. -
Month 6
Your baby may respond to sounds by moving or increasing the pulse, and you may notice jerking motions if baby hiccups.
If born prematurely, your baby may survive after the 23rd week of pregnancy with intensive care. -
Month 7
The baby starting to develop fat under his or her skin. The baby is almost 12 in. long, and weighs between 2 lbs to 4 lbs. The fetus can see, hear, taste, the brain and nervous system are growing rapidly. The baby responds to sound, can open and close its hands and eyes. -
Month 8
It’s been a long road, but you still have a lot to look forward to at eight months pregnant. By the end of week 37, your baby is very nearly full term.
Remember, only about 5 percent of babies arrive exactly on their due date, and most women give birth somewhere between week 38 and week 42. -
Month 9
The baby’s lungs are nearly fully developed, and the baby is now shedding the layer of hair that was protected in the uterus. The baby’s brain is growing tremendously. The baby is about 18 to 21 in long and weighs about 6 to 8 lbs. The baby is positioned his head down, ready to be delivered.
