Binet developmed assessment
Binet began to develop what is known as the Binet-Simon Scale today. He defined the differences between children of different mental capacities. He wanted his intelligence test to classify individuals for special education rather than test their intelligence. He developed a series of tests in 1905 that included a series of short problems relating to daily situations. These tests are arranged according to mental levels -
Buck v. Bell

American Association on Mental Deficiency
The American Association on Mental Deficiency was one of the first organizations of parent organized advocacy groups. In 1947, they help their first convention. -
Supplemental Security Income
SSI is a governmental program that provides stipends to those that are disabled. This is funded by the US Treasury general funds. -
Education for all Handicapped Children Act
This act required all public schools accept federal funds to provide equal access to education for children with physical and mental disabilities. Schools were required to evaluate handicapped students and create an educational plan with parent input that would give the student the best educational experience possible. -
Americans with Disabilities Act
The Americans with Disabilities Act is enacted allowing many 504 plans to become common for individuals. It was enacted to prohibit discrimination on the basis of disability. -
No Child Left Behind
Congress passed the No Child Left Behind law by an overwhelming vote. This is an act to close the achievement gap with "accountability, flexiblitly, and choice so no child is left behind." States are required to develop assessments in basic skills to be given to students. -
IDEA 2004
Under IDEA 2004, special education and related services should be designed to meet the unique needs of children with disabilities aged preschool through 21. Students would become prepared for further education, employment, and/or independent living. Students must receive a free and appropriate education in the least restrictive environment.
