Exposition 1 Congrats!
Addie ann Pickett has graduated from elementary school and gets a whole dollar from Uncle Bump. The only thing that ruins her fine day is when she hears from her brother that Medgar Evers got assassinated because of the movement of segregation. -
Exposition 2 Kukachoo, Mississippi
Old Man Adams, addie Ann and her Uncle Bump's Boss, was a very good man, but suddenly, he dies. Addie feels that all of Kukachoo, Mississippi should be grieving. -
Exposition 3 Addie is jobless
Addie and Uncle Bump have no job, so she can't earn money to help support the family of four, and this is really hard for the family. -
Rising Action1-The Will
Old Man Adams wrote in his will that the blacks and whites must share his property as equals. The whites are fuming about this, because blacks weren't considered equal. -
Rising Action 2-No honesty
The white mayor and sheriff lie to all of the whites and say that the garden is only for the whites, not both blacks and whites. the blacks are really very upset, they want to protest. -
Rising Action 3- Burning Cross
There is a burning cross at the meeting in the church. The Ku Klux Klan did it to represent the hatred from the whites to the blacks. -
Rising Action 4- Elias
Addie and Elias, her brother, go to buy honey. when they are there, Jimmy Worth and Buck Fowler, white boy bullies, play roughly with Addie's cat, Flapjack. Elias throws the honey pot at Jimmy's head and knocks him out. He then runs for his life, because he would surely be killed. -
Rising Action 5- the search
the sheriff and others are searching for Elias to take him to jail. the only problem is that they can't find him, and Addie thinks he got away safely. -
Rising Action 6- Garden work
The blacks are forced to live with not having the garden, and they are really upset. Mr. Mudge, the rich shopowner, hires the blacks to do the planting work, and they feel very sad about the garden. -
Rising action 7- The talk about protesting
The blacks don't want the bad vegetables at sundown, so they are talking about rebelling against the whites and going to the picking in the morning. -
Cimax- The picking
The blacks go to the picking in the morning and the field is overgrown with butter bean seeds. Uncle Bump is blamed for the sabotage, and Addie's house is burned down. -
Falling action 1- Uncle Bump
Uncle Bump is arrested and taken to court, and the judge is white, so the trial is very unfair. Luckily,Elias comes back and helps Addie through this, and even brings in a lawyer for Uncle Bump. -
Falling Action 2 -Mrs. Tate
Mrs. Tate comes in with some proof that Uncle Bump never planted the butter baean seeds, and supports Addie and her family with the proof.Even though most of the whites are horrified, the blacks are very grateful. -
Falling action 3- Mr.Mudge
Addie remembers that she saw Mr. Mudge burying something in the woods and leads everybody to the place where she saw him digging. There is nothing there, but when Flapjack, Addie's cat, hisses at a tree, Addie knows something is under the dirt there and starts digging. She finds two sacks that formerly held 50 lbs of butter beans. The Judge lets Uncle Bump go. -
Falling action 4-The family
Elias hears about the victory of the blacks, and goes home to Addie, Momma, and the newly freed Uncle Bump. Elias is very proud that Addie did all the crime-solving all by herself. -
Falling action 5
Addie's faily wants to move, and Addie is horrified. How will she be able to get that kiss from Cool Breeze and not lose him to Delilah, even though she was her best friend? How could she keep on being friends with Delilah in the middle of nowhere? Addie pores through these questions at night and feels very sad. -
Resolution 3- Ralphie
Addie is finally reunited with Ralphie, and loves him very much. This is the end of protesting, and the blacks and whites are sharing the garden they were meant to share at last. -
Resolution 1- Shared Garden
Addie finds out that she will stay in Kukachoo until she finishes middle school. The blacks and whites will finally share the garden. -
Resolution 2- Old Man Adam's house
There is a meeting at Old Man Adam's house and it feels really empty because of the absence of people in it. Addie nearly cries because of Ralphie ( Mrs. Tate's baby) wants her and he's not allowed to go to Addie.
