Vasco da Gama
Portuguese explorer, Vasco da Gama, arrives in India. Resistance from the locals forces him to leave but leaves a few of his men there to start a trading post. He later learns on his second voyage to India that they have been murdered. -

Mughal Empire
In 1526, Babur, a Timurid descendant of Timur and Genghis Khan, swept across the Khyber Pass and established the Mughal Empire. -
Europeans Arrive
In the early 1600's English and Dutch traders came to India. They valued the region's vast amount of spices and jewels. A small group of English Merchants formed the British East India Company and set up a trading post there. -
Taj Mahal
The Taj Mahal was built by Mughals. Built as a mausoleum located in Agra, India. It was commisioned by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his favorite wife, Mumtaz Mahal. -
British Rule
The battle of Plassey marks the begining of British rule in India. The British, with Indian allies, fought against the French and defeated them which made the British dominate in India. -
The First War of Independence
Conflict arose when the Indians got tired of The British East India Company's controll over their country. The United Kingdom stops this revolt. This is known as the First War of Independence. -
Independence
India and Pakistan become independent countries. They begin fighting over Jammu and Kashmir. -
Cease-Fire
The United Nations arranges a cease-fire and divides Jammu and Kashmir into two sepparate sections. -
Nuclear Tests
This year India became a nuclear superpower. Their first nuclear test, "Opparation Smiling Buddha" was a great success -
Tsunami
A deadly Tsunami killed over ten thousand poeple. It was caused by a magnitued 8.9 earthquake in the Indian Ocean. -
Muslim Invasion
Muslims begin to invade parts of India to expand their Islamic Empire. -
