  • Brown V. Board of Education

    Brown V. Board of Education
    Turning point for equality in education under the law. The famous "separate is not equal" statute. This was the foundation and primary case that opened the door for Special Education advocacy groups to not only have hope but see the pathway for change regarding equality and equity in education for different people.
  • ESEA

    ESEA
    The Elementary and Secondary Education Act is established, which created federally funded programs for education that could be given to states. This is the foundation for federal funding that we know and love.
  • Two KEY Supreme Court Rulings

    Two KEY Supreme Court Rulings
    PARC v. Pennyslvania and Mills v. D.C. Board of Education rulings apply to the equal treatment of people with disabilities under the law, with regards to education, funding, and treatment in public schools.
  • Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act

    Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act
    Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 establishes that peole cannot be discriminated against because of their disabilities. It also laid framework for additional services and supports including formal plans and eligibility criteria for people with disabilities. Sufficient support for people with disabilities in schools is achieved through SPED and 504 (Gen Ed program) .
  • FERPA

    FERPA
    The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). Protections for families and privacy are formally put in place.
  • Education for All Handicapped Children Act

    Education for All Handicapped Children Act
    Education for All Handicapped Children Act AKA the "Bill of rights" for people with disabilities is passed. This laid the groundwork for all SPED law that followed in its footsteps.
  • Related Services Expands!

    Related Services Expands!
    Education for All Handicapped Students Act Amendments extends the special education related services to age two!!!
  • IDEA!

    P.L. 94-142 is renamed to Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)!! IDEA is the overwhelming legislative fuel for protection and funding for people with disabilities in schools.
  • ADA Created!

    Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is created for equal access and continued growth towards equality for all!
  • IDEA Amended

    The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act was amended to improve outcomes and expand funding for people with disabilities across the nation.
  • Rosa's Law (Pub. L. 111-256)

    Rosa's Law was passed to updated the language and do away with "mental retardation" term and appropriately demand that we use people with "intellectual disabilities" formally in schools and facilities.
