Cotton Gin is Invented
Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin which changed agriculture forever. This totally changed the amount of effort and time people had to use to produce cotton, a leading industry then. Then things got controversial between the north and south because some people believed that more slaves were needed now to man the cotton gin, and abolishonists believed we would need less now because it would be easier. -
The National Road is Finished
The National Road made travel easier for people going anywhere from Maryland to the Ohio River. The road was made of crushed rock, and it was our best route at the time. The road marked the beginning of the Industrial Revolution. -
Missouri Compromise
The Missouri Compromise was the agreement that settled that Maine would be a free state and Missouri would be a slave state. This became a problem when Missouri was added to the union and it made the country uneven. It only kept the peace for a while, though. -
Samuel Morse's Telegraph
The telegraph was a machine that sent electrical pulses down a wire as coded signals. For the first time, messages were able to be sent almost instantly. This was a major communication improvement. -
Immigrants Fill Up The Manufacturing Industry
As immigrants from Ireland and Germany start to move in, the working class population goes up. The middle class population skyrocketed. Before 1840, immigrants were mostly form England or Scotland. Up to 1850, immigration numbers nearly doubled.
