-Jim Crow was a common term for black slaves and the Jim Crow laws enforced racial segregation in the south

-these laws were supposed to be important in establishing a separate but equal world, but they really just discriminated against the black people and left a negative impact -

-the Chinese Exclusion Act was a federal law prohibiting Chinese laborers from immigrating into the United States
-it was important because it was the first significant immigration law in the US
- it was repealed by the Magnuson Act on December 17, 1943 -
Sinking of the Lusitania
-the sinking of the Lusitania was caused by a German submarine in 1915
-this caused outrage among Americans due to all of the deaths of civilians
-this was important in pressuring Woodrow Wilson to enter World War I -
Zimmermann Telegram
-the Zimmermann Telegram was issued from the German Foreign Office in January 1917
-it was a communication from German Foreign Minister which offered US territory to Mexico in exchange for alining with them
-this was important because it was one of the main reasons why the US entered World War I -

Red Scare
-the first Red Scare occurred after World War I as tensions arose from anarchists and left wing socialists
-it was caused by the Bolshevik Revolution which struck fear that immigrants were going to take over the US government
-the First Red Scare was important in influencing the Immigration Act of 1924 -
Sedition Act
-the Sedition Act imposed harsh penalties on anyone who was guilty of making false statements that interfered with the prosecution of the war
-it was intended to protect America's participation in WWI
-the Sedition Act was crucial because it prevented disagreements during the war -
18th Amendment
-the 18th Amendment was passed by Congress on December 18, 1917 and ratified on January 16, 1919 and prohibited the manufacture, transportation, and sale of liquor
-instead of limiting crime it encouraged organized crime like bootlegging of alcohol
-it was important because it was the only amendment repealed from the Constitution -
19th Amendment
-the 19th Amendment, ratified on August 18, 1920, gave women the right to vote
-women's suffrage was important because it gave women more rights, meaning that their years and years of protest were finally paying off -
Immigration Act of 1924
-the purpose of the Immigration Act of 1924 was to slow the flood of immigrant entering the US
-it made national origin quotas the permanent basis for immigration policy, and the number of immigrants was limited to 2% of the number of that country's US residents
-it was significant because it essentially shut out any new people from having the ability to prosper in America -
John Scopes - The Monkey Trial
-John Thomas Scopes was accused of teaching evolution in his science class which violated a Tennessee state law
-the trial was very famous and had William Jennings Bryan and Clarence Darrow on opposing sides
-this trial was significant in challenging the bill's constitutionality and support the theory of evolution and ACLU
-Scopes was pronounced guilty and fined $100 -
20th Amendment
-the 20th Amendment was passed by Congress on March 2, 1932 and ratified January 23, 1933
-it moved the dates at which elected offices end, which shortened the period between election and the day the President and Congress members took office
-it is significant because it tried and failed to eliminate Lame Duck presidents and legislators -
21st Amendment
-the 21st Amendment was passed by Congress on February 20, 1933 and ratified December 5, 1933
-it repealed the 18th Amendment, therefore allowing the manufacturing, transportation, and sale of intoxicating liquor
-it was important because it admitted to a mistake made in the 18th Amendment
