  • Northwest Ordinance 1787

    Act passed by congress in 1787 that put down rules for governing the Northwest territory. This laid a basis of government in the northwest territory.
  • 3/5th Compromise

    3/5th Compromise
    A slave would count as 3/5th's of a person towards the population. This was important because slaves were treated as property rather than a person.
  • Fugitive Slave Act

    Fugitive Slave Act
    Slave Hunters were allowed to capture a slave runaway. Any person caught hiding a slave would be fined $500. It was nicknamed "bloodhound law" because of the dogs that would find runaway slaves.
  • Invention of Cotton Gin

    the cotton gin separated cotton from its seeds. This increased the amount of slaves because of the high demand in cotton.
  • Ban on Slave importation

    This was a federal law that stated that no new slaves were permitted to be imported into the u.s. This was important because it limited slavery.
  • Missouri Compromise

    This was a compromise that made Missouri a slave state and Maine a free state. This prohibited slavery north of the 36 degree 30 degree line, which made some happy and others outraged.
  • Nat Turner Rebellion

    Nat Turner held a slavery rebellion, to rebel against slavery. This was some slave owners scared of a rebel and also made laws on slaves even more strict.
  • South Carolina Nullification Crisis

    This was when tariff from 1828 and 1832 was ruled unconstitutional. This created conflict between South Carolina and the U.S government.
  • Organization of Underground Railroad

    Organization of Underground Railroad
    The underground railroad was a secret "network" rran by people who wanted to help slaves get to freedom. This led to even more strict rules of slaves.
  • Wilmot Proviso

    This was a proposal to ban slavery in territories that were won over from Mexico.This was important because when it wasn't passed, it showed how little the people in America had control
  • Treaty of Guadalupe

    This was a peace treaty between America and the Mexican republic. This was important because the tension was over and people could settle down.
  • Compromise of 1850

    This compromise had 5 different bills which were passed by U.S congress. This was important because it gave north a new free state.
  • Uncle Tom's Cabin

    Uncle Tom's Cabin
    This was a book that explained the truth of slavery and how harsh it is. This was very important because the north learned how horrible slavery was.
  • Kansas-Nebraska Act

    This act allowed Kansas and Nebraska to vote for slavery or not. This created/influenced popular sovereignty.
  • Bleeding Kansas

    This was a series of "civil confrontations" over Kansas becoming a slave state. This was important because it staged the first battles of the civil war.
  • Charles Sumner Attacked

    Charles Sumner Attacked
    Preston Brooks beat Sumner with a cane due to his speech towards slavery and the owners. This was important because it showed people were getting more and more violent as the time goes on.
  • Dred Scott decision

    Scott was a slave who sued for his freedom. Court declined and said that slaves were property. This outraged many people.
  • John Brown's raid at Harpers ferry

    John Brown's raid at Harpers ferry
    This was a rebellion lead by John Brown, who wanted to arm slaves. Of course, this didn't work out to well and Brown ended up being hung. Which didn't look too good for the abolitionist.
  • Lincolns election

    Lincoln was up against Stephen Douglas and clearly won. This sparked outrage in the south because they feared he would ban slavery.
  • S.C secedes from union

    Outraged by Lincolns election, the south secedes. After this, 11 other states seceded.
