Missouri Compromise
The United States admitted Missouri as a slave state and Maine as a free state. By doing this they kept the balance of slave and free states. During this time they drew a line across the Louisiana Purchase. North of the line you could not have slavery except for Missouri but south of the line you could have slavery. -
Nat Turners Rebelion
A rebellion in Virginia led a slave named Nat Turner set out to kill every white person they saw. His rebellion lasted two days and resulted in his death after trail. -

The Gag Rule
A rule that Congress voted in saying that they wouldn't discuss the issue of slavery. It lasted from 1836 to 1846. -
Wilmot Proviso
The Wilmot Proviso is an amendment added to a bill. The bill was asking for money to contribute to the Mexican-American war. The Wilmot Proviso said that any land acquired from the Mexican-American war would not have slavery. The bill got passed by the house but got rejected by the senate. -
Harriet Tubman Escapes Slavery
In 1849 Harriet Tubman heard she was going to get sold to a slave owner farther south so she decided to run away. It was a hard decision because she knew she would have to leaver her family. She safely made it to her destination and later joined the underground railroad. During her time with the underground railroad she escaped many people and family members from slavery. -
Compromise of 1850
California was admitted as a free state and New Mexico and Utah territories were allowed to pick if they wanted slavery or not. Slave trading was banned in Washington D.C but slave owners were allowed to keep there slaves there. They made a new strong fugitive slave law. -
Uncle Tom's cabin Published
A book about how bad slavery was written by Harriet Beecher. This novel enraged many northerners and opened their eyes to how bad slavery was. -
Kansas-Nebraska Act
It created two new territories (Kansas and Nebraska.) It abolished the Missouri compromise and allowed the people in the territories vote if they wanted slavery or not. -

A mini-civil war in Kansas between two competing governments (north and south) over there opinions on slavery. -
The Dred Scott Decision
A decision made the supreme court about slaves rights. A slave named Dred Scott thought he should be free because he traveled to Wisconsin which was a free state. The supreme decided that he couldn't sue for his freedom. The also decided that his stay in Wisconsin didn't make him a free man because the constitution guaranteed the protection of property. -
Lincoln-Douglas Debates
Political debates between Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas mainly over the issue of slavery in America. They were both running for senate. Douglas won but it made Abraham Lincoln very popular and well known. -
John Browns raid
A raid on a federal Arsenal in Harpers Ferry, Virginia led by an extreme abolitionist named John Brown. He wanted to arm slaves to start a rebellion to end slavery. Many of his men died during the raid and he was convicted of treason and sentenced to death. -
Abraham Lincoln Elected
On November 6, 1860 Abraham Lincoln was the first republican president to get elected.
