Origin
The 25th Amendment was first introduced after the assassination of John Kennedy. They had decided that there needed to be a procedure for if/when the President could not carry out his duties. -
Proposed
The 25th amendment was proposed on July 6th, 1985. This amendment clearly stated the succession that should take place if something were to happen to the President. -
Sections 1
Section one: that should a president die, resign, or is removed from office, the Vice President should become President. -
Section 3
Section 3 says that if the President becomes incapacitated then the Vice President should step in and make decisions -
Section 4
Section 4 says that if the Vice President and the majority of the Cabinet decide that the President cannot and is not fulfilling his duties than the Vice President should immediately step in. -
Section 2
Section 2 says that should the role of Vice President become vacant, the President will nominate someone to fill the vacancy. The nominee must then be approved by the House of Representatives and the Senate. -
Ratified
This marks the day that the 25th amendment had successfully made it through both phases and was officially passed and added to the constitution. -
Spiro Agnew resigns as Nixon's VP
Spiro Agnew resigned as Richard Nixon's Vice President, therefore invoking the 25th Amendment. Richard Nixon nominated Gerald Ford and he then served as Vice President. -
Gerald Ford becomes President
A year after Spiro Agnew's resignation, President Richard Nixon reigns as President due to the Watergate Affair, and Ford is now President because of the 25th amendment -

When Reagan underwent surgery he had to invoke the 25th amendment and Bush, the VP temporary served as President -
George Bush
Bush invoked the 25th Amendment twice while he underwent routine medical procedures during his term. -
Biden
Biden invoked the 25th Amendment to have a procedure done in November of 2021.
