It initiated as a series of phreatic blasts from the summit then escalated on May 18, 1980, as a major explosive eruption.

  • Nuclear Waste Policy

    President Reagan signs the Nuclear Waste Policy Act of 1982, the Nation's first comprehensive nuclear waste legislation. This established a comprehensive national program for the safe, permanent disposal of highly radioactive wastes. During the first 40 years that nuclear waste was being created in the United States, no legislation was enacted to manage its disposal.
