    NASA sent up ECHO, the first communications satellite to be seen with the naked eye
  • First man in space

    The soviets have sent the first man into space and the Americans need a man in space, too.Alan Shepard was sent to space in the "Freedom 7". On May 25, Kennedy wanted to have a man on the moon and back before the decade was over.
  • Around the world in 5 hours

    John Glenn became the first man to orbit the earth - 3 times. It was a five hour flight.
  • 'I have a Dream' presented by martin luther king

    Martin Luther King Jr. made the speech, "I have a Dream" on August 28, 1963. More than 200,000 peaceful demonstrators came to Washington DC to demand equal rights for Black and Whites. Part of the speech was - "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character…"

  • LBJ orders air strike on north vietnam

    LBJ=Lyndon Baines Johnson
    In an effort to provide space for negotiations during the Vietnam War, Johnson ordered a cessation of air strikes against North Vietnam on December 25, 1965. After one month of failed attempts to use diplomacy to promote peace, President Johnson voiced his intentions to former President Eisenhower to proceed with offensive attacks against the North. In a telephone conversation recorded on January 25, 1966, Johnson insisted upon the impossibility of extending the bombing
  • Walt Disney's death

    Death by Cancer Walter Elias Disney was born on December 5, 1901 in Chicago. Walt lived most of his childhood in Marceline, Missouri and showed an interest in drawing and art early in his life. He was rejected by the army in 1918, because he was underage and instead he joined the Red Cross in France. He returned one year later and wanted to pursue a career in commercial art. After a troubled start, he went to Hollywood at age 21 and slowly, but surely made it to the top of the cartoon world.
  • the first human heart transplant

    Groote Schuur Hospital was placed centre stage in the world's spotlight when Professor Christiaan Barnard performed the first human heart transplant on the third of December 1967. Sadly, Mr Louis Washkansky (pictured left) only lived for 18 days, succumbing in the end to pneumonia. His new heart beat strongly to the end.
