  • Gwendolyn Brooks

    Gwendolyn Brooks was the first Black women to win the Pulitizer award in poetry for her famous poem "We real Cool". The poem is based off of people who basically lived a short life because they left school, listened to jazz music, and went out late.
  • Korean War

    This was the start of the Korean War. A war which its idea was very similar to that of the situation in Vietnam. North being a dicatorship which wanted to control all of Korea and south being democratic was barley holding on until the United States joined the conflict and push the North into an agreement.

    In 1950, television played an important role in entertainment. Television was watched by many American citizens and were now buying televisons as culture was evolving.

    Portrait photograpy was relevant to Arts and Entertainment because these were portaits of artists. Not only artists in the fields of music if not actual art as well.
  • Vitenam War

    The Vietnam war was a proxy war folllowing the Cold War between North Vietnam and South Vietnam and United States. The Vietnam war ended between 1955-1975, this war was fought between the Democratic South Vietnam and the Communist North Vietnam.
  • Presidental Election

    John F. Kennedy was elected into presidency while competing against Richard Nixon.

    “John F. Kennedy, a wealthy Democratic senator from Massachusetts, was elected president in 1960, defeating Vice President Richard Nixon. Though he clearly won the electoral vote, Kennedy's received only 118,000 more votes than Nixon in this close election.”

    The Antiwar movement was a social movement meant to discourage conflict. The famous "Peace sign" was founded during this movement, it was a logo borrowed from the British nuclear disarment to the counterculture activists.

  • A poet at inaguation

    John F. Kennedy invited renowned poet Robert Frost to read a poem at his inauguration. Frost, who did not usually write commemorative poems, wrote a special poem. He was unable to read it, however, because the sun's glare on the snow was so intense he was unable to see. Instead, he recited his poem "The Gift Outright."

    This was an event launched by congress which gave president Johnson to do whatever he believed would retaliate and to promote the maintaence of international peace.

    The Arts and Entertainment topic about the postwar was based off of how arts and entertainment had changed because of World War 2. Famous artists were photographed as art, movies were made based off of African Americans getting involved socially and suchl.

  • Gay Bar

    On June 27, 1969, police raided the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in New York City’s Greenwich Village. The bar’s people sick of being subjected to harassment and discrimination, fought back: For five days, rioters took to the streets in protest. “The word is out,” one protester said. “[We] have had it with oppression.”

    This was an important era because there were multiple culture shapin events. Events such as the Civil rights movement, Vietnam War, Cold war, and the Antiwar movement. All of these events shaped what the United States is today.
