D-Day
D-Day, also known as Operation Overlord, was and still is the largest invasion ever staged. The allied forces landed troops on 5 different beaches of Normandy, France which began the end of World War II. -
Hiroshima
Upon Japan's refusal of the terms of the Postdam Declaration and the continued fighting, US forces planned to force Japan to surrender by dropping the first atomic bomb on the city of Hiroshima. -
Nagasaki
Only three days after Hiroshima, the United States dropped its second atomic bomb on another city in Japan, Nagasaki. As Japan's air force and navy were destroyed as well as many lives lost, Japan was forced to surrender, leading to the end of WWII. -
World War II Ends
The official surrender of Japan was signed on September 2, 1945, aboard the battleship USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay, bringing WWII to its final end. -
The Marshall Plan
The Marshall Plan, also known as the European Recovery Program, was a program sponsored by the United States, to provide aid to Europe following World War II. Over $13 billion was aided to Western Europe to help with the aftermath of the war. -
Harry Truman becomes President
President Truman was in office from 1945 to 1953 and is best known for bringing World War II to an end with the bombing of Hiroshima. -
The US joins the Korean War
On June 27th, two days after the war officially begins, President Truman sends forces to South Korea to send the message that the United States will be combating communism. -
Dwight Eisenhower becomes President
President Eisenhower was in office from 1953 to 1961 and is most commonly remembered for signing the Civil Rights Act which led to the integration of the schools in Little Rock, Arkansas.
