1930's Computer Technology Progression

  • Drum Memory

    Drum Memory
Gustav Tauschek, from Austria, received the patent for the magnetic drum device. In this model, the drums spun faster and there were shorter waiting times to find data. This invention helped pave the way for the hard disk drive.
  • Binary Digital Computer (Z1)

    Binary Digital Computer (Z1)
Konrad Zuse, of Germany, began developing the first electro-mechanicalbinary programmable computer. The Z1 contained most parts of a modern computer and could perform complex operations like multiplication and division.
  • Atanasoff-Berry Computer (ABC)

    Atanasoff-Berry Computer (ABC)
John Vincent Atanasoff and Clifford Berry, in an attempt to improve on the current calculating machines, began to work together at Iowa State University to develop what is considered the first electronic digital computer. The ABC was originally created to to solve linear algebra tic equations.
  • Xerography

    Xerography
Chester Carlson invented the process of electrocardiography. This is the 6 step process of transferring an image from one surface to another. This process was later developed by the Xerox Corporation.
  • Complex Number Calculator

    Complex Number Calculator
George Stibitze worked as a research mathematician at the Bell Telephone Laboratories. In 1939 he invented the Complex Number Calculator. This device was able to add, subtract, multiply, divide, and was the foundation for digital computers.
