Insulin was made usable
Dr. Frederick Banting, a Canadian, was looking for a cure to diabetes. He learned how to extract insulin from a dog and people thought it wouldn't work. A little boy named Leonard Thompson was really sick from diabetes and was the first human to be injected with insulin. The kid was so destroyed by diabetes that the insulin was his best chance of living. It was a huge success. -
Scopes Trial
It was illegal to teach evolution in Tennessee. This man's name is John T. Scopes. He was accused of teaching evolution to his high school students. He was found guilty but was set free because of a technicality. A year later the Butler Act was repealed. The Butler Act was the Act that declared teaching evolution illegal. -
Penicillin is Discovered
Alexander Fleming was a scientist that was trying to discover the "Wonder Drug." Fleming had a pile of Petri Dishes lying around when he was on vacation. When he got home and began to clean by putting them in a tray of Lysol, but some of the dishes would fit becuase there was so many. While shwoing the dish to someone he noticed that the mold in that dish had killed the Staphylococcus aureus (staph infection) bacteria in the dish. This mold contained penicillin in it. -
Al Capone is Arrested
Al Capone was a notorious leader of a huge gang. His gang were the people behind the Valentine's Day Massacre. He was eventually arrested on May 27, 1929 for carying concealed deadly weapons. -
Teapot dome Scandal
Senator Fall had conned the US Navy into giving him oil fields in Wyoming. He then sold these oil fields to his friends that owned private oil companies. In return he would get some money that came out of the businesses. He was caught and fined $100,000 and sentenced 1 year in jail. This was the first big scandal by the US government. -
FDR is President
- Born in 1882 at Hyde Park, New York--now a national historic site--he attended Harvard University and Columbia Law School. On St. Patrick's Day, 1905, he married Eleanor Roosevelt.
- He was elected President in November 1932, to the first of four terms.

Dust Bowl
- More and more dust storms had been blowing up in the years leading up to that day. In 1932, 14 dust storms were recorded on the Plains. In 1933, there were 38 storms.
- The Dust Bowl got its name after Black Sunday, April 14, 1935.

Pearl Harbor
The Japanese Empire attacked Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. This mission was to weaken America's Navy forces as they start to take over more of the Western Pacific Islands. This attack killed 2,402 Americans and led America into World War 2. -
D-Day
D-Day was a huge single day in WW2. This was the beginning of the rest of the war. Aorund 9,000 men died this day to set the beginning of taking back Europe from the Nazis. Taking back Europe was called Operation Overlord. -
Capture of Iwo Jima
With plans of bombing Tokyo and Japanese supply bases, America needed to stop the island of Iwo Jima from shooting down their planes. The only way to make this happen was to take control of that island. This plan, Operation Detachment, was a success and allowed our planes to go through and bomb tokyo and other major cities of Japan. -
Atomic Bomb on Hiroshima
The only way to win WW2 was to create the ultimate weapon. America came up with the Atomic Bomb. We had to drop this amazing horrible weapon on Hiroshima becuase the Japanese were so persistent. Even after the first bomb they still would not give up. We actually had to drop another bomb on Nagasaki before they gave up. -
Victory over Japan Day
This was the day that the States finally defeated the Japanese and made them surrender. Only after dropping two Atomic bombs would they stop. This was also the true end to the long horrible World War 2. -
Kent State Massacre
It was May 4, 1970. On this day four Kent Sate students were killed and nine were seriously wounded. The reason that this took place is because members from the Ohio National Guard fired into a crowd of Kent State Demonstrators. -
Abortion Legalized
Abortion was illegal in every society. In till the mid-to-late 1800’s that is when they passed laws that made abortion illegal. -
Nixon resigns
Nixon our 37th president resigned as president on August 9th 1974. The weird thing about this is he had 2 ½ years left in his term. Nixon was the first president in American history to ever resign. -
Jonestown Massacre
more than 900 people died in the South American Jungle. The reason this happened is because of what was called the Jonestown massacre. People say “it was done somewhat willingly which makes this mass suicide more disturbing” -
Three Mile Island
In 1979 at Three Mile Island nuclear power plant in USA a cooling malfunction caused part of the core to melt in the # 2 reactor. The TMI-2 reactor was destroyed.
Some radioactive gas was released a couple of days after the accident, but not enough to cause any dose above background levels to local residents. -
Assassination Attempt on the Pope
A man named Mehmet Ali Ağca tried to kill the Pope. A shot Pope John Pual II four times. He was sentenced life in prison but sent free in request from the Pope himself. -
Titanic was found
Ever since the unsinkable ship was sunk people have been trying to find it. Finally on September 1st a group of French and American scientists found it. The bow and stern of the giant ship were found seperated by 2,000 feet. -
Challenger Disaster
The Challenger was a Spaceship that exploded, killing 7 passengers, in 73 after it had been luanched off. On of the passengers was Christa McAuliffe, a high school teacher. This was the second American spacecraft to have a disaster. -
Chernobyl Disaster
In 1986 the nuclear powerplant in Chernobyl had the worst meltdown in history. Th explosion cuased radiation to spread to the atmosphere and to most parts of the USSR and some parts of Europe. The radiation spread was so great the the radiation levels in Sweden went way up. This diasater made the residents of Prypiat, a city next to the powerplant, evacuate. -
Berlin Wall goes Down
The Berlin wall seperated Germany's capitol from the East (the communist) side and the West (the Democratic). After Former President Ronald Reagan told his Tear down that wall speech (June 12, 1989) the West side made the East side tear down thw wall.
