Two U.S. Army planes complete the first round-the-world flight in 175 days. Four planes, the Seattle, Boston, New Orleans, and Chicago, with a total of eight crew members take off from Seattle, Washington. The Seattle and the Boston either crashed or was forced to land. -
Scopes Violates Ban on Teaching Evolution
Tennessee schoolteacher John Scopes is arrested for teaching evolution, in violation of new state law banning the teaching of Darwin's theory. People who attended cheered on Scopes as he walked in. Scopes is eventually found guilty. -
1926 Miami Hurricane
Hurricane hits Miami and south Florida, USA, destroying hotels, piers, marinas, mansions built in preceding years. 400 were killed. 50,000 were made homeless. -
Lindbergh's First Solo Transatlantic Flight
Aviator Charles Lindbergh completes the first solo transatlantic flight. He landed his Spirit of Saint Louis in Paris 33 hours after departing from New York. Lindbergh becomes a national hero. -
Hoover Elected as President
Herbert Hoover, running on a slogan of "A chicken in every pot, a car in every garage." He was elected to the presidency. Defeating Catholic Democrat Al Smith to maintain Republican dominance of the Oval Office. -
Stock Market Crashes
The American stock market collapses, signaling the onset of the Great Depression. The Dow Jones Industrial Average peaks in September 1929 at a level that it won't reach again until 1954. The Dow will bottom out at a Depression-era low of just 41.22 in 1932.
