  • Prohibition

    Prohibition
    From 1918-1922 the government banned the purchase and selling of alcohol. It was banned because it was causing social problems. People were doing under the table selling of alcohol, bootleggers and moonshine became very popular. In 1923 the doors swung open for legally sold alcohol. In America their laws were stricter for alcohol and they were on prohibition from 1920-1933
  • Spanish flu

    Spanish flu
    The spanish flu hit Canada from 1918-1920. There was a quarantine and there was no vaccine or cure for this yet. It came in multiple waves, the first wave came in the spring of 1918, then the fall of 1918, the spanish flu was horrible and caused dieseses that were very easy to spread. The second wave caused 90% of the deaths that occured. When the government failed to help they involved the Department of Health.
  • Jazz Age

    Jazz Age
    The Jazz age started in 1918 and ended in 1929. People were into music and dancing after the war and they wanted to do anything and everything to take their mind off the war. They created new dances like the charleston, which matched perfectly with jazz music.
  • Bloody Saturday

    Bloody Saturday
    People went onto strike but it is now known as bloody Saturday. The government arrested some of the labour leaders in order to try and shut down the strike but it didnt work. Police were racing around winnipeg trying to shut the strike down. People were getting more angry. The police and the hired union busters went to shut it down but instead injured multiple people and killed 2.
  • Residential schools

    Residential schools
    Residential schools were schools made for indigenous children to help them learn more about european life. Overall it was a nightmare. It became a place no child wanted to go. The kids there were abused and were scared to use their culture because it would get them in trouble. Once the residential schools got shut down, they got a formal apology and $10,000 dollars to each survivor of the school.
  • Flapper

    Flapper
    A flapper was a dress. It was short and sorta like a party dress. It was tight but flowy at the bottom. Women wore it to embrace their freedom. Women who wore it were seen as outrageous, rude, and dangerous.
  • Radio

    Radio
    New inventions were happening in the 20s. After the war people were bored and new inventions were keeping them excited. The radio was fun. You could listen to music or listen to a baseball game or football game and know what is happening.
  • Insulin

    Insulin
    In 1922 insulin was made. Insulin was a new invention and it was solving many problems. It was first made from cattle and pigs to treat diabetes but it wasnt perfect and people would get allergic reactions all the time.
  • The Chinese Exclusion Act

    The Chinese Exclusion Act
    An act for anti-chinese, racism, and policies. It was passed by Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King. It limited Chinese Immigration. Chinese people had to pay a fee of $500 just to enter.
  • The person's Case

    The person's Case
    Men weren't accepting women to be qualified for jobs like judges or Senate. Emily Murphy was a judge but in one of her cases a man didm't accept what she was saying because she was a wopmen. Eventually she fought for it and the supreme court said that the word persons qualifies women so they are able to be judges or senators.
  • Talkies

    Talkies
    In the 1920's movies were made. They didn't know how to add sound so instead they would use talkies. Talkies is where the person on the screenm actually isn't saying anything that you can hear. Instead a person would be using a microphone and speaking for them. It was entertaining for people to watch movies and kept people entertained.
  • The Great Depression

    The Great Depression
    The great depression happened when people were gambling with their mony. They would use credit to pay for stocks and people majorly went in debt, especially after it crashed. The stock market was down, businesses were going bankrupt and people were losing jobs left and right. People were becoming homeless and 25% of people were unemployed. People were getting arrested for not having jobs.
  • Black tuesday

    Black tuesday
    The stock market had crashed. People's life savings were on their and all of a sudden everything was extremely low. This happened when Wall Street Investors traded some 16 millionn shares on the New York Time Exchange in 1 day. After this crash the world experienced debt and homelessness. Then the Great Depression happened.
  • 5 cent speech

    5 cent speech
    The Five cent Speech was used by R.B. Bennet. He made the 5 cent speech and was eventually elected for Canada in 1930.
  • Relief

    Relief
    Relief programs were for people who had no money , no home, and no food. It was for people who were struggling and needed a little push. It wasn't much money but it was enough to eat and hopefully get shelter. It was created by President Roosevelt. He called it the Federal Emergency Relief Act.
  • On to Ottawa Trek

    On to Ottawa Trek
    Fore this a bunch of people marched through Ottawa. A bunch of angry unemployed men left their relief camps and took their demands to ottawa. It was peaceful but they demanded 3 days of relief assistance from the city.
