    The war was largely started because of Cuba's struggle for independence from Spain, and led to Spain renouncing claims to Cuba, ceding Guam and Puerto Rico to the US, and transfering sovereignty over the Philippines to the United States for $20,000,000. This ended Spanish colonial role in the Americas.

    It prevented highly adulterated or misbranded meat from being sold as food, and also required meat be slaughtered and processed in sanitary conditions.
  • Root-Takahira Agreement

    Affirmed the independence of China, maintenance of free trade, Japanese recognition of the American annexation of the Kingdom of Hawaii and the Philippines, and American recognition of Japan's position in northeast China. America also agreed that Japan had a right to annex Korea, as well as dominance in parts of Manchuria, and Japan agreed to the limits of Japanese immigration to California.

    Created the central banking system in the US and granted it authority to issue Federal Reserve Notes (the US dollar).
  • Beginning of WWI

    In a very short summary it was triggered by the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, which led Austria-Hungary to declare war on Serbia, which led Russia to declare war in support of Serbia. When Germany went through Belgium to get to France, Britain declared war on Germany. From that point there was trench warfare along the Western Front which changed very little until 1917.

    Led by Marcus Garvery, it promoted racial pride, self-sufficiency, and the formation of an independent black nation. These ideas went against many others with the main goal of being accepted into white society.

    The US mainly entered because of economic reasons, as they needed Britain and France to be able to pay back their loans. When Germany declared unrestricted submarine warfare, the US declared war.
  • End of WWI

    By the end of the war, the German Empire, Russian Empire, Austro-Hungarian Empire and the Ottoman Empire no longer existed, and several other countries were created, which led to many borders being redrawn. The League of Nations was created with intentions of preventing such an event from happening again, but several factors led to this not working and, as a result, WWII.

  • Treaty of Versailles

    Ended the state of war between Germany and the Allied powers and forced Germany to disarm, rearranged Germany's borderies, and pay a large amount of reparations. The reparations were literally impossible for Germany to pay right away, and had to be renegotiated through the Dawes and Young Plans.

    A summer filled with race riots, generally between whites and African Americans, as a result of racial tensions caused by the migration of blacks to northern cities and into jobs that had been previously unavailable to them, which had opened up while many men were at war.

    Sometimes considered the beginning of WWII. Broke out when China began full scale resistance to the expansion of Japanese influence. Japan's occupation ended when they were defeated by the allies.
