    The temperance movement sparked the 18th Amendment. They first urged moderation then when that wasn't working they encouraged other drinkers to help each other resist drinking. When neither of these really worked they demanded that local, state, and national governments prohibit alcohol.

    This organization's end goal was also to ban the sale of alcohol. It was the unification of the public anti-alcohol segment. They provided enforcement for the existing temperance laws that were made during the temperance movement.

    The Senate passed a resolution to present a constitutional amendment. This amendment would ban the sale of alcohol. This amendment would make the women happy because their husbands would stop coming home drunk and abusive. They could get their husbands back and live a happier and safer life. Their lives would be better for their children as well.

    The 18th Amendment was ratified by the states on January 16, 1919. This amendment banned the sale of alcohol. The women really pushed for this amendment because their husbands would come home drunk and would be abusive. When the men would come home drunk not only would they be abusive they wouldn't help take care of the kids.

    They provided enforcement for the 18th Amendment. If there were no enforcement for this amendment nobody would have followed it and then the amendment would have been pointless. Even with the enforcement of the amendment speakeasies were created which were essentially an underground bar.

    The speakeasy was created as a way to have alcohol without being caught in the era of prohibition. A speakeasy was like a bar with entertainment they were bootlegging alcohol in because during prohibition they were not allowed to have alcohol. Speakeasies were America's worst-kept secret because lots of people knew about them.

    The prohibition era began on January 16th, 1920. People became sneakier about getting and consuming alcohol. Speakeasies were created and very well-known and loved by many. Bootlegging became a huge issue in America during this time.

    Legal enforcement begins
    On January 17th, 1920, law enforcement began on the 18th amendment. They passed the Volstead Act in October 1919 which created law enforcement. The law enforcement didn't go into effect until January 1920.
  • The Cullen Harrison Act

    The Cullen Harrison Act
    The Cullen-Harrison Act went into effect on March 22, 1933. This act permitted the manufacturing of low-alcohol beer and wine. This made a lot of people especially men very happy because it gave them a sign of hope that prohibition was ending.

    Prohibition ended with the ratification of the 21st Amendment. The ban on alcohol was officially over. The amendment wasn't really working to begin with because there were speakeasies and other ways people could sneak alcohol.
