Dawes Act
The Dawes Act was to bribe the Native Americans to be more like Americans. It wanted to break up the lands and divide the small plots so each family had their own bit of land. The American settlers made the Natives go to boarding school and speak English, which had devastating effects on the Natives culture and community.

Hawaii was annexed
Hawaii was very valuable to the United States. IT would boost the economy in sugar and fruits, and also provide a military base and the pacific. So the US overthrow the Queen, and later on President William McKinley approved the annexation to make it apart of the US. The addition of Hawaii made the United States naval power present in the Pacific Ocean. -
Plessy v. Ferguson
"Separate but equal" The court case was when a black male was in a white only area, which violated the segregation laws. He brought up the 14th Amendment, but the Supreme Curt ruled against him. This court case led to legalized segregation. -
Spanish American War
The Spanish-American War was a conflict between the United States and Spain. It lasted about three months which is the shortest war ever. It started on the Philippine islands because the USS Maine exploded. Theodore Roosevelt defeated the Spanish troops and in August of 1898 the Treaty of Paris ended the war. This was increased their power to make them a world power. -
Treaty of Paris
The Treaty of Paris (1898) officially ended the Spanish-American War. The treaty forced Spain to give up its control over Cuba, Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines to the United States. The U.S. paid $20 million to Spain for the Philippines. This treaty established the U.S. as a global power with overseas territories. -
Big Stick Policy
This was a foreign policy by President Theodore Roosevelt. It started people could have peaceful negotiations, but the military can be involved. This tightened control of the new land, but was difficult to maintain this control. The Great White Fleek was also involved. It was a warning group that basically said "don't mess with our land". -
The Jungle Book
The Jungle by Upton Sinclair, was a novel that exposed the meat factories in the US. There were poor working conditions, unsanitary practices, and the exploitation of immigrants. As a result it led to the Pure food and Drug act, which improved the safety and cleanliness of food safety. -
Home Front of WW1
The home front during World War is when Americans supported the war effort from within the U.S. The people and the government provided support for the war through supplies, troops, and financial support. The government imposed war bonds, rationing, women working, and many more things to help win the war. The government's main goal was to boost patriotism. They wanted citizens to be proud of their country and be willing to fight for it. -
panama canal
The Panama Canal is a man-made river that is a route across Central America which made global trade way faster. However over the 10 years of making the river it was very difficult. The warm tropical climate, lack of workers, unstable terrain, and diseases from mosquitoes made it a deadly job. Many workers died which is why it took so long. The Big Stick Policy really pushed the construction of the canal because it was believe to boost the economy. -
WW1
The United States joined World War I on April 6, 1917, after declaring war on Germany and remaining neutral for 3 years. Joining the war wasn't an impulsive decision. It was caused by multiple attacks by German submarines on Americans. The Zimmerman Telegram was another reason for joining the war. The American troops fought through and the war ended with Germany signing his surrender. Which lead to the Treaty of Versailles. -
espionage and sedition acts
These were laws that were passed in WW1 to restrict the rights of the citizens. The Espionage Act made it so you had to agree with the military, and the Sedition Act made it so you couldn't talk bad about the government. Both of these laws took away the god given right of the American people, which ended up leading to many debates and activists. -
Treaty of Versailles
The Treaty of Versailles ended World War 1. It was a treaty between the Allied Powers (the U.S., France, Italy, and Britain), which placed strict and harsh penalties on Germany. The Treaty stated that Germany had to take full blame for the war, pay back all of the debt, reduce their military, and give up their land. This created the League of Nations. However this treaty was the caused of World War 2 -
19th Amendment
The 19th Amendment granted women the right to vote, but it didn't come easy. There was long periods of activism and movements lead by women like Susan B Anthony and Elizabeth Stanton. This was a breakthrough for women's rights for all of the protests they did about equality in genders. However women of color still faced discrimination. -
Stock Market Crash
This event lead to the great depression. The stock market ended up crashing, and because so many people had invested all of their money into it there was no money left over. Banks also invested into the stock market, so they lost all of their money too. This lead to a major distrust in banks and the failure of the economy. It had long lasting effects on the people and caused many deaths and poverty. -
The Great Depression
The Great Depression was a severe economic crisis that was caused by the stock market crash, which led to widespread bank failures, a high unemployment rate, and poverty. Many businesses and farms were lost, which led to famine and loss of money. However President Roosevelt made the saying "relief, recovery, and reform" to help boost America again. The U.S. slowly recovered but came to a big boost when WW2 started. -
The Holocaust
The Holocaust was led by Adolf Hitler, who had control over the Nazi's in Germany. He led a genocide to attempt to eliminate all Jews. He ended up killing millions of Jews, gays, and the impaired. There were many concentration camps or death camps that the people were sent to, which they worked until they died. -
Attack on Pearl Harbor
The attack on Pearl Harbor was when Japan launched a random military attack on the U.S. navy base in Hawaii. The attack killed and injured many, and a long with that destroyed the military resources like aircraft, battleships, and materials. The U.S. was infuriated by this and declared war on Japan, which is where they entered World War 2. America ended up joining the Allied Powers against the Axis forces. -
The Cuban Missile Crisis
The Cuban Missile Crisis was a standoff between the Soviet Union and the United States. It all started when the Soviet Union placed missiles in Cuba that were aimed for the United States. This caused President Kennedy to order a naval blockade in Cuba to get the missiles removed. An agreement was made where the missiles will be removed as long as the United states doesn't invade Cuba. This stopped a nuclear that could be fatal. -
9/11 terrorist attacks
The attack on the twin towers on September 11th 2001, was a terrorist attack. A group called "al-Qaeda" hijacked planes. Two of them crashed into the World Trade Center Towers in New York, while another hit the Pentagon in Washington D.C., and the last one crashed into a field in Pennsylvania. Thousands of people were killed because of this attack. It caused a big amount of fear in the American citizens, but ultimately pulled everyone together as a nation. -
COVID-19
COVID-19 was a global pandemic caused by the coronavirus. It was first detected in China, in late 2019 and quickly spread worldwide. The virus caused millions of deaths, overworked healthcare systems, and led to global lock downs. Around 7 million people have died because of the virus. The symptoms could be a mild cold, or put you in the hospital for lung and breathing problems. Many people worked from home because of the lock down, so the normal way of life changed completely.
