  • Enforcement Act

    The Enforcement act also known as the Civil Rights Act of 1875, was put in place to protect African Americans rights. It gave African Americans equal treatment, and allowed them to serve in the Jury.
  • Battle of Little Bighorn

    The Battle of Little Bighorn was a fight between Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer and his soildiers, and the Lakota Sioux Indians. This battle was a marker for the Indians as a huge victory, and the worst defeat for the US in the Indian wars.
  • Haymarket Riot

    Labor protests were going on all throughout the US. The protest started off peaceful, but got wilder. After the police showed up, someone threw a bomb at them. The police opened fire and everything turned to chaos. Seven police officers were killed along with at least one civilian. Multiple were injured.
  • AFL formed

    On December 8, 1886 in Columbus, Ohio the American Federation of Labor was formed. It was founded by Samuel Gompers, and formed by an alliance of craft unions from the Knights of Labor.
  • Interstate Commerce Commission Formed

    The Interstate Commerce Commission was Formed on February 4, 1887 by Grover Cleveland. It was put in place to regulate railroads and transportation.
  • Dawes Act 1887

    This act was created by a Senator of Massachusetts named Henry Dawes. The purpose of this act was to change the ownership of Indian lands from being owned by tribes to being owned by individuals. This Act let the US president look over Indian lands, and divide them among specific Indian people. It gave citizenship to people who went along with this and lived apart from the Tribes.
  • Massacre at Wounded Knee

    The final battle between the US Government and the Sioux happened at Wounded Knee, on an Indian Reservation in South Dakota. This resulted in the deaths of around 300 Indians, and 25 American soldiers.
  • Pollock v Farmers

    This court ruling eliminated the federal income tax of 1894. The vote was 5-4, and the Supreme Court ruled income tax as unconstitutional.
  • Spanish-American War

    The war was fought between the Us and Spain. It started with the destruction of the USS Maine in Cuba. This lead to the United States helping Cuba gain independence from Spain. The war resulted in the Treaty of Paris, where Spain gave their claims to Cuba, Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines to the US.
  • Annexation of Hawaii

    In 1898, after King Kalakaua died, Queen Liliuokalani tried to put the Monarchy back in place, but she was overthrown. The US saw Hawaii as an important gain for the economy, so they attempted to annex it. Finally, on June 7, 1898, President McKinley signed the Newlands Resolution, which allowed Hawaii to be annexed.
