1800-1808 events leading up to the war of 1812

  • Louisianna Purchase

    Louisianna Purchase
    The United States purchased land from the French. Napolean sold it for 15 million dollars. This made America double in size and allowed western expansion. This would be a big help for the U.S but will make a problem with the Native Americans.
  • France and Britain go to war

    France and Britain go to war
    Around this time war broke out between Britain and France. This would cause major problems for the U.S with both Britain and France.
  • Blockade

    The British Blockaded Europe when they went to war with the French. A blockade is a way to prevent ships from leaving or entering ports. By doing this many American ships were seized.
  • France refuses British goods

    At the begging of the war France stopped allowing Brtitish goods into Europe. This would harm Britain economically by not being able to sell goods in Europe.
  • Impressment

    The British started the use of impressment. This is when the British would seize the American ships they would kidnap the American sailors and force them to serve in the British Navy.
  • Chesapeake Bay incident

    A British Captin wanted to check an American ship but when the American Captain refused the British opened fire. They killed 3 Americans and hurt 18.This made many Americans furious.
  • War Hawks

    Around this time aa group of people called the War Hawks emerged. These are people who are strongly infavor of the war.They are also providing political pressure to the government to go to war.
  • Embargo

    Around this time Thoms Jefferson declared an embargoThis means congress banned exporting goods to other countries. They thought this would hurt Britain by depriving them of America's resources but it really hurt the U.S with buisness.
  • James Madison in office

    James Madison in office
    James Masison was elected president in 1808. He was left with all of these problems with Britian and had to make a choice on what to do.
  • Embargo Act removed

    Around this time at the start of Madisons presidency the Embargo Act was removed. This is both good and bad thing for the U.S because the Embargo act was harming the U.S economically, but now Britain has America's resoources available.
