This was the time of reconstruction in the south, investing more into agriculture and economy. the southern states were helped by the north to build up strong governments again -

The south was best at growing and harvesting crops, especially cotton, but it took a while to clean and process the cotton. growth was slow and harvesting even slower. -
The cotton gin
A man by the name Eli Whitney created a machine that separated the cotton fibers from the seeds, which decreased the amount of time it took to process the cotton. -
cotton exports
cotton production increase due to the cotton gin and more investing in cotton growth and harvest -
cotton popularity
by 1830 cotton was being very quickly produced and processed and Georgia became the south's #1 textile producer. -
In need of slaves
the cotton business was booming but there weren't enough people to keep up with with the cotton gins fast paced production.
(so there was increase of slaves) -
civil catastrophe
the civil war began and textile companies were making clothing and materials for soldiers, which gave the south an advantage....but not for long... -

burn the textiles
"the march to the sea" in that time the union army burned almost all of the mills to the ground to prevent the south from making anymore cotton products. -

rebuild the south
Henry w. Grady encouraged the atlanta constitution to have a cotton mill in every georgia town, so rebuilding the mills started and ended during this time.
