    The monarchy ends with Louis XVI, when he cuts the third estate out of the estates general. Louis and his wife were held in prison until they were later beheaded. The third estate took over after the monarchy ended and started National Assembly.

    Bastille Day
    This is the day that the french stormed the Bastille prison and took over the monarchy. They stormed the Bastille prison because it was a symbol of oppression, to free the debtors, and there were weapons believed to be in the prison. In France this day is their independance day.

    The National Convention started when the National Assembly's constitution was finished, and ended when the National Convention had turned corrupt and inflation was too high.     Robespierre Creates the Reign of Terror

    Maximilien Robespierre is the head of Public Safety. Starting in 1793, he began the Reign of Terror in which he killed anyone though to be against the current government or in favor of bringing back the king.     Second Constitution Establishes Directory Government
    After the reign of terror and the death of Maximilien Robespierre, the public sought for a new government, and so the Leaders of the National Convention drafted a new government called the Directory. This government put the power in the hands of upper middle class citizens.

    Directory government began after the end of the reign of terror in 1795, and ended when Napoleon commenced a coup d'etat in 1799.

    Napolean Takes over Directory Government and Creates Consulate Government
    With a non-violent coup d'etat, Napoleon Bonaparte ended the Directory government and began his Consulate government. The Consulate government consisted of three consuls that were elected by lawmakers from the Directory, and Napoleon was first consul.
