Chinese Civil War (between Jiang Jieshi and Mao Zedong)
A war set in China. The communist side was led by Mao Zedong and the nationalist side was led by Jiang Jieshi. The nationalist slowly took back all of China from the communists. Ended in 1949. -
Berlin Airlift
Began construction in 1948 where they layed down 12 foot thick rubber base for the landing of military aircraft. After so many, it began to break and after a plane landed repair men would have to go and fix it. Eventually three airlifts were constructed. -
Berlin Blockade
The Soviet blockades of Berlin were put in place because the institution of the Marshall Plan for European Recovery; the London Conferences of winter and spring of 1948; and the resultant London Program. They finally decided to end it in May 1949 due to the fact that they realized it wasn't going to work. -
Formation of NATO
A rival alliance that nearly 12 Western nations formed. This alignment provided the framework for the military standoff that continued throughout the Cold War. -
National Security Council Report NSC-68
A 58 page top-secret policy paper. It was issued to the United States National Secutrity Council. This paper largely shaped the U.S. Foreign policy and was involved in the decision of containment against communism spreading. -
Korean War
Between North and South Korea it was a war against international communism that the Americans joined in on South Korea's side. About 5 million casualties. On July 27, 1953 an armistice was signed and the war ended. -
President Truman fires General MacArthur
President Truman fires General MacArthur for making public statements that contradicted the administrations policies. In other words, he wasn't aloud to give out such information that denied the truth! Even though he was considered a war hero of WWII, he was still fired for such reasons. -
Formation of the Warsaw Pact
The alignment of nearly every European nation into one of the two opposing camps. It formalized the political division of the European continent and has taken place since World War II.
