  • East inida company

In 1600, Elizabeth I founded the East India Company to develop trade between England and India. English has become the language of commerce. However, some words that mean something in the UK have another meaning in Indian English. A special dictionary called Hobson-Jobson was created to explain the meaning of these words.
  • The Triangle Trade

The English came to the Caribbean with settlers in the 1620s. A new form of English called Creole is thought to have begun as a simplified version of English spoken among sailors and slaves on the ships that took Africans to the Caribbean. We know that he used many English words combined. Many Creole words were 'borrowed' from indigenous peoples and are now used in English. Cigarettes and hammocks are examples.
  • The "first fleet"

The "First Fleet" arrived at Port Jackson, Australia (now the city of Sydney) in 1788. The "First Fleet" was her fleet of 11 ships containing about 780 British. These were not free people. Many of them were "deported for life" criminals. This meant that they had committed crimes in England, were sent to Australia as punishment and were not allowed to return to England.
