1st English Settlement-Jamestown
Jamestown was the first English settlement in east Virginia founded by the Virginia Company. The early years in this settlement were difficult. Natives Americans had lived in this territory for hundreds of years. Therefore, tensions arose when Europeans arrived on their soil. In addition to the difficulties with Natives, settlers had struggles adapting to the new land--finding and cultivating sources of food. -

Santa Fe, established in 1610, was the first pernament European settlement in the Southwest. -
First Cargo of Tobacco
In 1617 the Jamestown colony sent its first cargo of tobacco back to England. This shipment marked the beginning of high demand for tobacco. In fifteen years, America will be exporting five hundred thousand pounds of tobacco per year. -
House of Burgesses
The House of Burgesses was a group of white landowners, a legislative body, established by the Virginia Company. This was one of the first expressions of democracy in America. -
1st Africans in Virginia
Near the end of 1619, the Dutch sold Africans to the Virginia Company. These twenty Africans marked the beginning of slavery in America. -
Plymouth Colony
Around 100 English men and women set sail for the New World. Their ship, the Mayflower, landed in present-day Massachusetts in 1620. To establish rules and order, the settlers developed the Mayflower Compact--the first document in America for self-government. The first winter for the English settlers was brutal. Fortunately, local Native Americans aided the settlers. -
Arrival of English Settlers in Maryland
English Protestants and Catholics arrived in Maryland in March of 1634. -
King Philip's War
King Philip's War, lasting from 1675-1678, was fought between English colonists and Native Americans. The cause of the war was that colonists wanted more land. -
Bacon's Rebellion
Nathaniel Bacon led a revolt again the Native Americans living in the colonies in 1676. Bacon and his men seized Jamestown and burned it to the ground.
