In 1619, two major events happened in the state of Virginia. The first was the creation of the House of Burgesses. The House of Burgesses was the first form of legislature in America. The second event was the birth of slavery in the south. A Dutch ship brought over the 20 african slaves and sold them to the Virginians. -

King Philip's War
King Philip's War was a brutal war between certain Native Americans and english settlers. An indian named Metacom, known by the English as King Philip, ordered three warriors to kill an Englishman. As retaliation, the English found and killed the three warriors. This caused a war between Metacam and the English that would last for a year. After a constant back and forth, Metacam was finally killed in August of 1676. As a result, thousands of Indians were sold as slaves. -

Bacon's Rebellion
Bacon's Rebellion started because of an argument over a pig. An Englishman refused to pay a debt he owed to Indians. As a result, the Indians took pigs as payment. The English killed several Indians as pay back. The Indians retaliated and started attacking colonists. A group led by Nathaniel Bacon, started killing Indians and decided to rebel against the colonial government. Bacon died to typhus in 1676 and his successor surrendered to the government in 1677. -
First Paper Bills
In 1690, Massachusetts was the first place to use paper bills as a type of currency. -
