  • Jamestown

    The colonists established Jamestown. Which is the first permanent English colony in modern day United States. Jamestown was a uninhabited peninsula but, it had terrible soil for agriculture and brackish tidal water caused disease.
  • Founding of the Hudson River

    Henry Hudson was commissioned by the Dutch commissioned to discover the Northwest passage in 1609. However, he failed but in stead discovered the Hudson River and claimed modern-day New York for the Dutch.
  • House of Burgesses

    In 1619 the Virginia Company established the House of Burgesses and they had their first meeting. The house of burgesses' representative body was made up of white landowning males.
  • Jamestown Massacre

    The tobacco economy grew rapidly and took lots of land. This led to America taking land constantly from the Powhatan Indians. The Powhatan Indians got upset and a rebelled causes a massacre.
  • Charles I is beheaded

    Charles I is exucuted on a scaffold. This caused England became a republic and protectorate under Oliver Cromwell. This is important because it effect the British's relationship with America. The new government under Cromwell became very controlling over the colonies.
  • Navigation Act of 1651

    The colonies became rebellious, due to issues with the British government's hold on America. In response to the rebellion, the Navigation Act act in 1650 was passed by the British Government This act forced merchants in all the colony to ship goods directly to England in English ships.
  • New Amsterdam became Newyork

    New Amsterdam was taken from the Dutch, after they left the settlement vulnerable to English attack. Therefor, England took their chance and captured New Amsterdam and named it New York. The name comes from the proprietor, James, the Duke of York, brother to Charles II.
  • Louisiana is claimed for France

    Robert de la Salle sailed along the Mississippi River on a canoe expedition. Once he reached the mouth of the river, he claiming the region for France and calling it Louisiana.
  • The first paper money

    Massachusetts became the first colony to issue paper money. With the economy expanded noted, which are similar to checks, were invited first. However, after paper money became popular, it tended to lose value quicker than coins and was often counterfeited.
