Jamestown was founded
Jamestown was founded in 1607. This was the first permanent English settlement that would eventually grow to be the United States. This was the capital of the Virginia colony and flourished for almost 100 years. -
The House of Burgesses
The first representative assembly in the United States meets for the first time in Virginia. This is also when the first African slaves were brought to Jamestown. -
Mayflower Arrivial
Prior to disembarking on their ship (The Mayflower) 41 male passengers signed the Mayflower Compact. The Mayflower Compact was an agreement that bounded the passengers to live in a civil society according to their own laws -
New Netherlands
The Dutch West India Company received charter for New Netherlands. The Dutch colonized parts of Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, and Delaware. They called this New Netherland. (founded in 1626) However, in 1664, King James II sent troops to seize the colony. -
Pequot War
The Pequot War was fought from 1636 until 1637. The Pequot people fought against a coalition of English settlers from the Massachusetts Bay, Saybrook colonies and Connecticut. They also had Native American allies. -
The Fundamental Orders
Connecticut adopted its first constitution, the Fundamental Orders. The Fundamental orders provided a framework for the government and guidelines for the powers of the government. -
New government in New York
England installed a municipal government in New York, formally the Dutch settlement (New Netherlands). -
Pennsylvania Coming Soon
King Charles II, the king of England at the time, granted a charter to William Penn for an area of land. This land would later become Pennsylvania. -
The Mississippi
A French explorer by the name, Robert La Salle, reached the Mississippi River. The purpose of this was so the French could establish trade routes. -
Money
The first paper money in the United States was issued by the colony of Massachusetts. This made trading and buying much easier.
