Slaves arrive to the Americas
Slaves were brought to America and they arrived in Jamestown, Virginia where the main settlement was at the time. The slaves were brought from Afirica and they were much needed in America because of the work that needed to be done on the farms. -
Northwest Ordinance
The Northwest Ordinance proibited slavery Northwest of the Ohio River. -
Nat Turner's Rebellion
This rebellion was led by Nat Turner and it led to the most fatalities of white people by a slave rebellion with the count of 55-65 deaths. This rebellion lasted a few days and once it was over it lead to a widespread fear and white militias organized in retaliation against slaves. -
Formation of Republican Party
The Republican party was formed by anti-slavery expansion activists. This group was often called the Grand Old Party. The republican party was formed to abolish slavery. -
Abraham Lincoln is Eleceted as the 16th President
On November 6, 1860 Abraham was elected as the president of the United States. He was part of the Republican Party, and he was against slavery. He went into office in 1861 and he was later assassinated. -
Southern States Secede
Delegates to the South Carolina convention unanimously approved a secession resolution which made it the first of 11 Southern slave states to leave the Union. On December 22, 1860 Harper's Weekly showed a picture of South Carolina seceding. -
Civil War
The civil war started in 1861 and lasted until 1865. The war was fought between the confedeacy and the union. The reason to this war was because the confederacy seceded and they wanted slavery. -
Emancipation Proclamation
Abraham Lincoln announced that he would issue a formal emancipation of all slaves in any state of the Confederate States of America that did not return to Union control by January 1, 1863. He announced this on Septemner 22, 1862. -
13th Amendment Ratified
This amendment was passed on January 31, 1865 and was later ratified on December 6, 1865. This amendment states that slevery is illegal. -
Jim Crow Laws
These laws took into place after the amendment was ratified. The laws enforce segregation between blacks and whites.
