    Quickly after World War II, the Soviet Union and the United States quickly became enemies. The United States' goal was to contain communist government systems around the world. At that time, the USSR (or Soviet Union) supported the expansion of communist government, making the US and USSR enemies.

  • Berlin Blockade and Airlift

    Berlin Blockade and Airlift
    US and Britain forces flew 2 million tons of supplies to West Berlin which, at the time, was blockaded by the Soviets. Right after World War II, Germany was divided into four sectors. Part of Berlin was controlled by the Soviet Union at the time. The Western Allies decided to unify their occupation zones to create West Berlin. When there was a blockade was put up to prevent the supplies from comming in, the US and Britain came back and airlifted the supplies in.

    The US and RVN opposed the Vietnamese communists and it's sponser, North Vietnam. The communists won in 1975 and set back the United States' plans in containment of communism in Asia.
  • Alger Hiss

    Alger Hiss
    He was a politician convicted of perjury in 1950 for denying association with a USSR agent. Before that, the case came to national attention in 1948 at the time of the fear of communist government inflitrating the US.
  • Korean War

    Korean War
    A war that took place between North and South Korea about communist government. North Korea was aided by the USSR and China while South Korea was aided by the US whom were against communist government expansion. The War ended on July 27, 1953.

    U-2 Spy Plane
    A fighter plane that was designed in upmost secrecy by the US. The plane can go to great heights and has a wingspan of 24.4m (80ft), almost twicce the length of its body. It first flew in 1955.
  • Sputnik

    A project that was the three USSR satillites launched in 1957 and 1958. It was the opening of the space race between the US and Soviet Union.

    East German Government began contsructing a system of concrete and barbed wire barriors between East and West Berlin to prevent East Germans from seeking asylum in the west.
  • Cuban Missle Crisis

    Cuban Missle Crisis
    A televised speech that JFK publicly announced that the USSR had began to deploy medium (and intermediate) range nuclear
    missles aproximately 145km (90miles) from the coast of Florida. The president promised that if the US or Latin America was attacked by the Soviets then the US would retaliate.

    1st Man on the Moon
    Neil Armstrong was the first man on the moonon July 20, 1969. Armstrong was in the Navy before and obtained his pilot liscence when he was only 16 years old. He flew combat missions for the Navy. After, he joined NASA and became the first man to set foot on the moon.
