Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin
Edwin Aldrin was on the Gemini XII; this flight was the last of the Gemini missions. He launched from Cape Kennedy on that mission. Twenty-one hours into the mission Buzz began his first space walk. He was 160 miles above Ethiopia when he pushed open the hatch and floated out of the capsule. This was his first space mission but was later on the Apollo 11 with Neil Armstrong and was among the first men on the moon. -
Neil Armstrong
Neil Armstrong was one of the first men on the moon. He said the famous quote "That's one small step for man; one giant leap for mankind." He also said "The Eagle has landed". Him and his fellow astronauts got to explore the moon for about 2.5 hours. -
Michael Collins
Michael Collins was also among the first men to be on the moon. His second flight was the Apollo 11, the first manned flight to land on the moon. In an interview about the mission, Collins revealed he was "very worried about the safety of Armstrong and Aldrin." -
Sally Kristen Ride
Sally was the first American woman in space. She got this job by responding to an advertisement she found in the paper saying that they needed an astronaut and she found that interesting. She was aboard the Space Shuttle Challenger.Sally Ride was the first woman to use the robot arm in space, and the first to retrieve a satellite using the arm. She has spent a total of 343 hours in space because of her second flight in 1984. Her second flight was also in a Challenger. -
Dr Marc Garneau
Dr Marc Garneau was the first Canadian in space; he was aboard the Space Shuttle Challenger. After Marc Garneau was chosen to be an astronaut many more Canadians were chosen to be astronauts, like Dave Williams and Roberta Bondar. He has been logged in for almost 678 hours in space; he is now retired from being an astronaut. He became the President of the Space Agency in November of 2001. -
Dr Roberta Bondar
Dr Roberta Bondar was the first Canadian woman to fly in space. She was on the 14th flight to outer space. She was on the Challenger. Roberta Bondar spent 8 days in space and landed in California on January 30, 1992. -
Dr Dafydd (Dave) Rhys William
He went into space for 16 days at this time, while in space he went around the Earth 256 times. He started as a successful emergency surgeon. After his first mission he was the Director of the Space and Life Sciences Directorate at the Johnson Space Center in Housten Texas. In 2007 Dafydd went back into space and helped assemble the Canadarm and the Canadarm2. Fun Fact: Dafydd Williams was born here, in Saskatoon SK.
