Our 1st Colony - Virginia The London Company founded Virginia during the reign of James I of England in 1607. The original intention of the colony was to form a settlement at Roanoke. In 1624, Virginia was named by some settlers from England. They named half of Virginia Jamestown in honor of their king. -
It's A New World!
Plymouth Colony In September 1620, the Pilgrims left England to find a New World. They landed in Plymouth in November 1620, after 2 months out on sea. In 1621, the Pilgrims met a Native American named Squanto. They later shared a feast with the Pokamoket tribe, which is the reason we celebrate Thanksgiving every year. -

Maryland - The 4th Colony
The 4th Colony - Maryland On March 25, 1634, Maryland became the 4th colony. Lord Baltimore was in charge of Maryland. He agreed to give King Charles I any gold or silver found in Maryland, after the colony was founded. Maryland was named after Mary, the mother of Christ. -
Originally known as Carolina Colony
South Carolina South Carolina was given to 8 Lord Proprietors by King Charles II in 1663. At the time, the province included both North and South Carolina. The Carolina's were one colony until 1729. The colony was largely agricultural. Many of the settlers were African Americans from the Carribean Island of Barbados. -
New Amsterdam Becomes New York
For only $24... September 8,1664, New York became the 11th Colony. Before it's famous name, it used to be called New Amsterdam. They changed it to New York in honor of the Duke of York. The colony was brought from the local Indians for $24 worth of goods. -
Province Of Georgia - Georgia Colony
"In Trust of the Poor" Georgia Colony Georgia was named after King George II. It was the 13th colony to be founded. James Oglethorpe and other colonists founded it. It was a royal colony in 1775. Spain wanted to claim Georgia as part of Florida. Georgia was founded for poor people who could not pay their debts back in England.
