Raleigh hired Simon Fernandez to transport over 100 people including women and children to a settlement near Chesapeake Bay to begin a more permanent settlement. John White was in charge and brought his family with him. When he arrived in 1587, he found the men in the fort had been killed.

At first the Pilgrims had a celebration which was called thanksgiving which was used for prayers since they were a religious community. They were thankful for being alive and Squanto's kindness, so they had a fall harvest and they wanted to share their food with the Wampanoags so they invited Squanto, Chief Massasoit ,and 90 other Wampanoags. There celebration lasted three days and us Americans call it the first Thanksgiving.
